E92 M3 or E63 M6?

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to decide which vehicle to get next and I have a few questions to ask in order to help me make the decision.

1. Which year M6 has SMG-III gearbox? I've been hearing that lots of issues with 06-08 SMG models...

2. Which car is easier to do maintenance on? the E92 or the E63?

3. Any current owner would like to share a bit of advice over these 2 cars?

Thanks for reading my post!

I'd say e92 for maintenance.. 2 less cylinders so 2 less spark plugs to replace.

Sorry, can't be of further assistance but good luck on your choice! Do al little browsing around on the forums here. You'll find all the info you need.

Thank you for your feedback, I am browsing around and I think I do have a general idea of what I am getting into on both of these cars. I just need to hear more feedbacks haha

1) All models of the E60 M5/E63 M6 were fitted with SMG III by default (US models had an additional 6MT option, however).
2) The E9X M3 would cost far less to maintain in the long run. Just to name a few things: Besides the obvious changing 8 spark plugs being cheaper than 10, which is certainly true, there are other things as well. The 6 speed transmissions are identical, but the DCT & SMG are worlds apart when it comes to reliability. Earlier DCTs were prone to software glitches but for the most part, mechanical failures are rare & more common on SMG & their hydraulic pumps. The VANOS in the S85 V10 is high pressure and is more subject to failure than the S65 VANOS, which is a low pressure system.
Also since you mention "which is easier", that also goes to the M3. For starters, the S85 is a true dry-sump, which means even an oil change is more complicated than on the S65. While certainly possible to do DIY on both, the M3 would certainly be "easier" by definition.
3) I don't own both but I've driven the E60 M5 extensively, which is the same platform as the E63 M6, albeit with 2 more doors. The choice is simple do you want a large luxury GT, or a smaller sports-saloon type of car. While the S85 V10 certainly sounds glorious and has plentiful power, the E6X platform is far from nimble. For a drive to Vegas, the M5/M6; for a lap on the track or cruising in the canyons, the M3. For daily, well that depends on what qualities matter more to you.

Good luck

Maintenance, V8 hands down. I actually crossed shopped an M5 6MT with my E92, and in the end, I couldn't live with 12 MPG.

Not really true. The S85 actually has a system similar to the S65. It's a wet sump, which is set up more like a quasi dry sump. The oil accumulates in the oil pan. It's just that it's actively pumped to one end of that pan which is quite large and stores almost all the oil. A true dry sump system has the oil stored in an external tank totally separate from the engine. Look under the hood of a C6 Z06 and you'll see it.

Semantics aside, OP asked which one is "easier" to work on. Due to the the complexity of the oil system in the S85 (& location of the oil filter), simple tasks such as an oil change on the S65 would simpler, hence "easier".

If getting the M6 please make sure you look into a warranty. Those SMG pumps are famous for failing. My e46 M3 failed on me only 500 miles after buying one used in 2011. They are VERY expensive to repair out of pocket. Good luck!

I sold my e63 M6 a few months ago. It was an amazing car. I did have a few issues, but had the extended warranty on it so they were all covered.

I did a fair amount of work on the car myself, and if you are knowledgable there is a lot of information out there. Go for a 2008 or newer, preferably a 2010 or 2009. Those seem to be more reliable. Also make sure you get an extended warranty, through BMW or a third party.

The M3 is a great, small sports car. The M6, however, sets a whole new standard. People see M3s all the time and they aren't that big a deal. When you roll up in the M6, everybody notices.

It's really all up to you and how much you are willing to spend. The price is actually pretty close to the same now, but the M6 will likely cost you more in the long run. But to me, it was worth it.

Depends on the purpose of the car you want. Do you want for DD? or Sunday cruiser? Are you friends with your local BMW dealer?

As far as the cars go, they're both well made machines, with their respective faults. My guess is the M6 will require more attention.

Ouch, not a great way to start. But then again, my throttle valve actuator went out within the first week of owning my E92 M3. The joys of BMW's out of warranty
