BMW N55 Engine Wins 2014 Engine of the Year Award 2.5-3.0L Category

The 2014 Engine of the Year Awards have just been announced in Stuttgart, Germany today and taking home the prize for best engine in the 2.5-Liter to 3-Liter category is the BMW N55 twin-power turbo 6-cylinder engine. BMW six-cylinder designs have picked up this trophy nine times in the last 10 years, and 13 times overall.

This engine is currently used in nearly all models across BMW's range - the BMW 135i, 640i, 740i (320ps), 235i (326ps), 335i, 435i, Z4 35i, 535i, X3 35i, X5 35i, and X6 35i (306ps)).

The power of this 3.0 twin power turbo is all you need for a very fast car,” enthused Spanish judge Arturo de Andrés. “Besides that, you also have the wonderful sound of a six-cylinder as well as exceptional driveability.” Jason Cammisa from Automobile Magazine was one of many judges to be impressed: “BMW’s straight six as a petrol or diesel, conventional or hybrid, connected to a manual, DCT, or automatic, is simply the best, most refined powertrain most of us will ever experience.”

Other BMW Engines

BMW managed to land another 3 engines in the same category, with the BMW S55 from the new M3/M4 coming in 3rd place, the diesel N57D in 5th place and the diesel N57S in 6th place.

Taking top prize in the 1.4L to 1.8L category is the 1.6L turbo petrol motor from the MINI.

The BMW i3's two cylinder engine range-extender and full-electric powertrain came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the Green Engine category.

This award, one of the annual highlights of the automotive industry calendar, is judged by an 82 person panel of international experts to have achieved excellence in powertrain engineering. See the entire list of categories and winners at: http://www.ukipme.com/engineoftheyear/index.php

Not the best year for BMW other than N55 win. Actually, worst overall that I recall. Obviously even the S55 did not impress judges much and it finished last in the Performance Engine category. In-line six diesels did a good job of finding place among high performance gas rivals though.

And doesn't Z435is still use the N54?

Wow, I'm surprised the judges chose the ageing N55 over the S55.

ITT: A 5 year old engine is "aging" and doesn't deserve to win anything.

Didn't realize age should be an automatic disqualifier for an otherwise well designed, smooth, efficient and powerful engine.

Also not surprised to see Ford's 1.0L 3 cylinder ecoboost win top honors.

Um, what? Brand new S55 engine that has gobs of power and torque, and everyone is raving about in the new M3/M4 comes in 3rd? Why, exactly?

That category is not just about performance, that is likely why it didn't come in first.

Only two awards for BMW? They usually won at least four. Maybe I'm getting a bit spoiled. Was expecting the M3/M4 to win at least one. It shows the S55 isn't nowhere near as special as the S65 it replaces, which won many awards. Again wasn't expecting the AMG 2.0L turbo engine to win 2 awards though, given the fact that some reviewers disliked it.

It also had stiff competition with stellar engines from Ferrari and Porsche. Ferrari's new V8 won the performance category.

I have a 2014 35is and you are indeed right - it has the N54 engine (code N54T) not the N55. My X3 has the N55 however.

You have no idea what you actually missed.

The N54 is the more robust engine.

Cool I have (2) winners on the 2013 list (N55 & N18), and (1) former winner (S65). Personally, if I had to rank them. S65>N18>N55 respectively. The N18 has been solid, I am impressed with the power delivery. The N55 although an I-6 single turbo, kind of reminds of the N63 TTV8 in temperament., specifically the way it idles. No comparison obviously from a performance perspective.
