So my friend just bought one these 'Black Onyx' things...

This thing blew me away, 6 gigs of RAM (he upgraded to 8), 500 gig HD, 18.4" screen with a built-in Blu-Ray player, all for $880. I've been using macs for a while but this would definitely be tempting if I needed to replace my laptop. He said our local Best Buy sold out of them within a day or two.

it says it in the link I think...it actually didn't feel as heavy as I would have expected. That being said, I don't think it was every intended to be super portable, when you see it in person it is totally massive. My friend is using it to replace his ancient desktop so it will probably spend most of its life on a desk

I don't see the point to these things. really inconvenient to carry around, and if you're getting it as a desktop replacement...you can't really upgrade it much.

I'll stay with a small 13-15" laptop or even a netbook for mobility and build a desktop

+1...way too big for me for a laptop

Pros:

-Blu-ray
-Nice large screen
-Reasonable HDD size
-Decent amount of memory

Cons:

-Not portable
-Mediocre processor
-Crap graphics card
-Crap resolution for that size of monitor (would expect 1080/1050 at that size)

Basically you are buying a 900 dollar Blu-ray player with an 18" screen that is too large to be portable. I just don't see the value. Yeah, it has blu-ray, who cares if it can't function very well as a legitimate computer.

The ONLY value I could see is maybe for a college student that could use this as a media center and desktop replacement. Something small enough to easily bring home for the holidays, yet large enough to watch movies on. I just wouldn't want to play video games on it or use it for anything besides Word Processing and watching movies.

Yea the resolution is horrible for such a large display. What a waste of Blu-ray. Movies probably won't look much better than DVD on a display like that.

to each his own....people see big screens for cheap with heaps of ram...they say yes...

No one really understands what a proper GPU/CPU is for laptops nowadays...well I don't think they ever did (consumers that is).
