BS or Not BS?? OEM vs After Market Tires...

I have a 2013 X3 with barely 27k miles...Still running the OEM Pirelli All Season rubber.

Remaining Front Tread: 3/32
Remaining Rear Tread: 4/32

With only 27k! What the heck? Now I'm going to have to put another set of rubber on the car before I return it at lease end and I aint too happy about it.

I talked to 3 different, local, retail tire places and everyone of them told me that OEM tires are not the same compound and do not have same tread life/warranty as their aftermarket counterparts with the same brand name and model.

They said carefully check the tire pamphlet in the auto glovebox and note the lack of warranty that compares to the same brand and model aftermarket..

Has anyone ever heard this before? And I don't drive like a madman either...

Just buy some used tires and put them on your X3. Done.

That sounds like a crock of shit and doesn't make any sense.

Edit: being told that OEMs use a different compound than what's available if you buy the same brand/series third party.

I don't really understand why you're upset. Tires are a wear item with tread life that varies depending on how the car is driven and the minimum tread depths at turn-in are spelled out in your lease contract. My 135i needed a new set toward the end of the lease as well and I changed over to snow tires each winter, which meant I probably had 15k on the stockers at most. That aside, I agree with others about buying a used set off a forum member (that's what I did).

The only warranty I see is 2/32" for the first year. You're well outside of that.

I recommend using bestusedtires.com. I bought 2 tires from them and they were even better than described. They had a bit more tread than it said on the website and they had no punctures or any type of repair. If you don't like them, they have a 60 day return policy (as long as you don't use the tires).

Not affiliated to them, just a happy customer.

One of my wife's girlfriends had a G37 that was end of lease, and I told her to either check Craigslist or local tire shops for used tires. Buy tires that just barely meet requirements and you'll be fine.

Same brand/model tires do have brand specific codes. Take new m3/m4 for example, the michelin pilot super sport that came on it are not same as regular michelin pilot super sports, at least BMW claims so in their marketing.

if you look for tires at tire rack, youll often see same tire list twice or three times. Once for generic, then maybe Porsche or Benz etc fitments.

I called tire rack once and asked for a set, but they said Audi specific tire was out of stock. I said what about the benz one, and they said I am welcome to put it on, and it would work, but it is not exaclty the same as OEM.

Right, like the 458 having "specially-developed PS2s" on its initial run of cars when the compound was essentially that of a PSS.

Nothing prevents the buyer from getting those though, right? You just have to find the right supplier.

OEM rubber is not necessarily the same. Car companies make deals with tire companies to meet certain special requirements... fuel econ or performance. They run them during prototype and calibration phases. Makes tire companies accountable if something goes wrong during production (ie they get a spec). A lot of times it doesn't jive exactly with something the tire company already sells, so they just brand it something already made to avoid unnecessary confusion. This is standard practice.
