Cayman owners

Hey guys and gals,

I'm looking at buying a used Caymen for a weekender/track day car. What's the best forums to be looking at? I've kinda trolled around and they all seem about the same.

Anyone on here have any tips for a first-time Porsche buyer? Anything specific I should look at on the Cayman?

The Planet 9 Forum is pretty good. I would start there.

Are looking at a base Cayman or a Cayman S (or the new GTS)?

I moved to a Cayman S last year, after a string of BMW's. Simply an amazing car, driving dynamics are in a completely different league.

Right now I'm more or less looking. I went out for a test drive in an 07 base model with a 5 spd. I was surprised how much power it had considering it didn't have much at all. It has 12500 kms on the clock and they're asking $39000.

There's a second car I'd like to look at, it's an 06 S for $32000 with 85000 kms on the clock.

I want to do some research before buying, that's for certain. I won't buy probably until spring of next year.

If you can spring for an 09+ S, do it. The early model S had some engine issues when cornering hard. They need a bit of aftermarket oil components to be worry free. If you have the extra money, get an 09+ and you wont have to worry.

i'm on all of them and planet-9 seems to be the spot. unfortunately, none are as active as the bmw forums though.

I moved from a Z4coupe 3.0SI to a 2014 CS. I'd be interested in hearing your views on the move from a Z4MC to the CS. I lack an intangible attachment to the CS, even though the driving dynamics are addictive. I sometimed contemplate a move back into a Z4MC, sounds like from your perspective I'd be giving up a lot.

I have a Cayman GTS on order, ETA 2nd-3th week of August, Sapphire Blue, and all the drivers goodies on it.

Having owned a E46 M3, E92 M3, and now a E82 1M (staying, will not sell it) so a Cayman GTS will come next to my 1M.

It was a hard decision for me not to buy an F82 M4, but as I commented before in other threats, the M3-4 are IMHO too big, too stretched, they have come to far off the territory where the M3 once used to be. No doubt the new M3-4 are fast as hell, but that is not what I`m looking for in a car, I want it small, nimble and agile.

The coming M2 could be what I`m looking for in BMW, but for now the 1M and the coming 981 Cayman GTS will do the job just fine for me.

When it has arrived it will be my pleasure to comment on it and make a comparison to my 1M !

Cayman S. Used. Although I make good money, I'm not in a position where I'd feel comfortable with a $1700/month payment for a brand new Porsche. I would also feel bad taking it to the track. If I can get an S for around $30k I'll be happy.

I've looked into the 09+ cars and they're almost 10 grand more. I'm sure I can do oiling upgrades amongst other things for $10k.

The Z4 M Coupe and the 981 Cayman S are so different. The Z4M is much less livable on the street - suspension is much stiffer, visibility poor, and I never liked the transmission. The move from 1st to 2nd is very latchy/imprecise and I understand this is normal. The Cayman S does everything better, in a more civilized way, and the sounds it makes are more addicting. Having also owned BMW's with DCT, I can tell you also that the PDK is a step change ahead in terms of implementation. An amazing transmission. Everything on the 981 just feels balanced and 'right' somehow.

Having said this, the Z4 M is indeed a special car. It's too bad BMW can't resurrect the concept. The new M4 is interesting, and I'm sure fast as hell, but it is now just too large for my liking. Sounds like an M2 is coming...could be interesting if they get the styling right.

Cheers on the reply. I figured I'd give up a lot in driving dynamics moving from the CS to the Z4MC (certainly the CS blows the 3.0SI out of the water, wasn't sure about how strong the contrast was with the Z4MC), but I do miss the love I have for the Z4C. I don't have that intangible connection to the CS, but you are right the CS is a great joy to drive. But yah I would love if BMW brought the Mcoupe back in some way...
