Crazy fuel consumption

I'm having questions regarding my fuel consumption. I recently move back to Hong Kong (for a semester) and had to use my E93 323i. Since the engine is much smaller than my E92 M3, I'd expect my fuel consumption to be way lower, but I was shocked when the gauge read 18.4 l/100km = 12.78mpg!!!!!!!! I took it to the dealer.... they said nothing was wrong with the car. Remembering the top gear episode in which they show an M3 being more fuel efficient than a Prius depending on the driving style, I tried to drive the car as soft as I could. The fuel consumption still won't budge. My commute also mainly consist of highways (so it's not like I am constantly stuck in stop-go traffic). Wtf is going on?

But I'm doing 12mpg.... and it's 323 not 328. And I'm mostly doing highways. Top up or top down don't make much difference... I tried.

are you reading the "overall fuel consumption" gauge? which will record the entire fuel consumption until you reset. reset the gauge and drive careful...the readout should improve dramatically...

The only thing I can think of is that the 323 engine is working harder to move all that weight, thus burning more fuel.

The figure was after I reset. I was only getting 10.22mpg.

I get less than 10mpg around town. Usually rip it from stop at least to 5k rpm.

Seriously considering a forced induction car when my lease it up. I fill up 1.5 times a week. UGH.

Yeh......but u are driving an M3. I get 14mpg in my M3 (spirited driving included).... but I'm talking abt a 2.3L engine here... not 4.0 a high revving V8.

This is the most likely reasoning I can think of as well. Stick an underpowered engine in a relatively heavy car and you end up with a mill that gets worked too hard.

He says he drives it as soft as he can.
that is relative. I can shoot you in the face "as softly as I can" but its gonna blow off your head nonetheless.

Yeah, but then you involve common sense and the relative details provided in the OP.

The e93 is heavy, and the 323i motor isn't very powerful, this combination will lead to using lots of gas. Im sure the mpg youre looking at is an average, so reset it and then see how it is.

Off topic but your S550 is the W221 not the W220, that was the previous body style. Nice stable of cars.

I had a 2009 E90 323i loaner for a day and I got 6L/100km (39.5 mpg) on highways. I don't think the heavier E93 will account for the difference in fuel consumption. Something is wrong with either the car or your driving habits.
