Don't you love digital! Except for the missed shots, the learning experiences are free.

Love that one. Great light, colors and motion feel.

Thanks Dave, yeah that is my favorite shot from the night. All came together.

I was in a helicopter over big island in Hawaii once (in 2005) and just as we started to fly right over live erupting lava, I had to change my film and the chopper pilot said, "man what a horrible time to have to change film!" Then I begged him to circle around. Yeah, digital rocks.

You should see the amount of shots that I leave on the cutting room floor after a weekend at the track!

What would you suggest as a beginner's serious digital camera? Is it possible to get anything "decent" around $800-1,000? Forgive my ignorance. PM me, I don't want to threadjack.

[Edit] I did some quick looking, some of you are probably laughing about now. Looks like $1,000 won't buy me much in this hobby/profession.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with an entry level DSLR from whichever brand you prefer and a couple of kit lenses to get into photography. If you want your money to go further, look at used or refurbished.

Yes, go used to get started. If you end up not sticking with it, then you didn't waste too much. If you get really serious and want to move up, then you can recover your investment in your starter kit and reinvest.

Abandoned jet ski show amphitheater with gorgeous view of Miami ... was the site of the BMW meet over the weekend.

Action from yesterday morning. Notice how urban this is, five-minutes from my apartment:

Big Buck Runs 4 by dcstep, on Flickr

If you click on the image, it'll take you to Flickr, where this is part of a six-frame series. The three-generation old Canon 7D still does a decent job, even at ISO 6400. It had lots of noise before Raw conversion, so I crushed it with DxO's PRIME noise reduction option. PRIME's logarithm goes pixel by pixel and took about 8-minutes per image, but it worth it when shooting in low light conditions like this, with a fast, moving subject.

Very cool series Dave. I still use my 7D quite a bit too, but I am eagerly waiting to see what Canon reveals next week.

I'm ready to jump all over a 7D MkII, if it's anywhere near the rumors.

Not worth selling the 7D with the way prices have dropped through the floor. Besides, I may shoot some university football this season and the 7D paired with the new Sigma 120-300 should be formidable.

With good light, the 7D is still pretty darn good. When light levels fall, the 3-generation old sensor shows its age, with noise building very quickly.

Agreed. Night games will belong to the 5D MkIII.

Yes. We're in York, UK and heading to Lumley Castle tomorrow for dinner and to spend the night there. Then it's up to the Northumberland area for a few days before working our way back to Heathrow by next Friday.
