Lease Extend or Buy?

I did some searching and hopefully this thread isn’t a repeat.

I’ve got a 2011 E92 right now and my lease is up in December. The new F80 looks amazing and I think I’d like to order one as soon as orders open up. My question is about what to do between now and the time the F80 would show up.

I have 3 options.

1. Lease extend til the summer when the F80 shows up.
2. Buy my E92 and then trade it in if/when I want an F80.
3. Go carless. AHHH!

I’ve already talked to my dealer about option 1 and they have said they would lease extend me. I’ve never done this before so I’m not really sure what is the least-bad of the two options as far as throwing money away on my E92 if I really do get the F80 as soon as I can.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom they can share with me on these two options? Does the lease extend just add more time to my lease but at the same payment? Keeping my E92 and waiting for the F80 LCI is also an option but so far the F80 just looks amazing.

Thanks!

BMWFS will give you a "few" months grace period once your lease expires to decide on the next car. However, you can have up to a 6 month extension so long as you have a car on order. So that should take you to March to place the order and to June to receive the car. The lease terms remain the same during this period.

Some problems you may run into however, are the new lease terms are going to be ridiculous! And if there are any delays in production or delays in being released once stateside, you may be without a car for a couple of wks

Residuals are going to be super low for several months after the debut of this car. BMWFS isn't going to subsidize the residual on one of their halo M cars. Do a search on the residuals for the M5 when it first came out last summer. 48% for 36m was the rate for quite a while.

My E90 M3 lease (take over) is up end of January. I plan to buy mine out. It really depends on your car's value vs it's residual buy out and your own finances.

For mine, the original owner had a 15k mi/yr lease and drove slightly under that. When I took over I drove waaay under that and now I have a low to moderate miles vehicle with a low residual. I think my real value will be about $4-5k over the residual. Now I do have to pay tax if I buy though and in Seattle it's 9.8% for cars, so.... ouch. That $4-5k "equity" pretty much disappears. Still, I won't be underwater if I buy out and with each purchase payment I'll be further ahead of the depreciation.

There's a lot of factors and numbers to think about with this, but with a purchase option you could come out ahead in the end, even if it's only 6-9 months you're talking about.

Alternatively, buy a $3000 Civic for 6 months.
