Any Medical Students/Professionals?

I'm currently debating changing fields and going to med school - I've been discussing this with friends who are on either side and some say that PA is the better option and vice versa.

I'm 26 so think I'm a bit old to jump into a 4+3 (med and residency) program, anyone that's been in the same boat and can offer advice?

Just curious what field are you currently in? And how do you know you will like the medical field besides the pay?

Already have a masters in applied math, worked in research and predictive modeling but this stuff bores me.

I was originally pre-med but changed due to other issues (not grade related)..so I'll have to take some prereqs which would put my starting age (if I get in on my first try) at 28. It isn't a decision I'm thinking about after a beer but one thats existed for a while.

CRNA is always a option. You could get a BS in nursing in two years typically since you already have a BS. Then get a masters and become a CRNA? I know some one that is doing it, it seems pretty neat if you like medial and it wont take quite as long as a MD. Just food for thought.

My sister is turning 34 and has just finished her residency. She recently started another two years for her specialization. There is a lot of learning, training, and long hours. But I guess the same can be said about a lot of jobs these days. If you have the interest and the stubbornness to get through it, then I'd say go for it.

If it's something that you love to do, then it's not too late.

I'm 30 and just started pharmacy school. Go for it. If u don't have a bs then do a post Bac program like I did to get ur per reqs. Good luck.

PA is a good field but if you can pull off being a MD then why not...worst case you can apply to DO school

I am a second year medical student, turning 25 this year. From my personal experience, 26 is in no way too old to start medical school. I have lots of classmates and friends who started medical school at older ages than myself. As the years ago by, the average age of starting school gets older and older, simply due to people's academic achievements and time lines.

Speaking from my experience and the roller coaster ride I've been through, you have to REALLY want to be a doctor to go through this. Having to deal with a lot of sacrifices, struggles, and commitment is not always easy. To me though, it has only been worth it.

There are definitely other alternatives and options out there if you want to be in the medical field, all of which are great professions. Ultimately, it's just a matter of what you want to do and how far you want to go.

Best of luck with your decision!

Hey!

Sorry, I made a correction on my original post. I finished my 2nd year of medical school, but still studying for Step 1, so technically still a 2nd year as well.

I'll PM you later today!

I don't think it's ever too late. I've been in the military for 6 years now, but have wanted to go to Vet School for a while. I'm 27, and can't get out until I'm 29. I'd be starting Vet School even later if I wanted to still, so it would be tough, but people have told me the same thing, "It's never too late."

Good luck with your choice!
