300 hp electric powered Datsun beats M3 in 1/4 mile

www.opb.org/programs/ofg/videos/view/56-Electric-Drag-Racing

Yes. a little old Datsun converted to 300 hp. electric motor beats up an M3 and many other muscle cars in the 1/4 mile - under 12 seconds. Amazing video.

Who cares really? Electric motors have all their torque available right off the bat and so we should expect results of that kind on short distances. Electric motors however have low rpm limit so therefore ultimately low hp. This results in ultimately low max speed. On a longer distance the M3 will kill the little Datsun.

You think that car runs 10s and 11s at essentially idle? It revs in order to get those trap speeds.

But, you think 10,000+ rpm is low rpm limits? Electric motors can spin pretty fast...

As for hp, the White Zombie pictured, running with Lithium Ion bateries, weighs 1900 lbs, has 770 lb ft of torque and 450 hp. Now, I dont' know about you, but it's my opinion that 450 hp is more than the M3 has, as well. And if they used a transmission with multiple gears, rather than direct drive, that 450 hp and 770 lb ft of torque would be capable of sme pretty impressive speeds, considering the "redline" of an electric motor is fairly high.

The Killacycle, and electric drag race motorcycle, using similar batteries and the same motor controller (and similar 8" DC electric motors), is doing over 174mph in the quarter with direct drive, so the rpms to do very high top speeds are there.

cool vid, the bike was my fav part, that thing looked/sounded like an rc car on steroids.

now all we need are large improvements in batteries, and nuclear fusion to power it all

I watched a movie of the 'owner' or someone of the killacycle team. He did a burn out and when he let off it caught traction and he smashed and wrecked into a parked car.

Found it:

Oh yeah, no trunk or backseat and probably a 4-pass range at the local dragstrip. Sign me up!

Also notice the trap speed? 107 mph on a 12 second run. Thing was running out of juice really quick....

it took 80 years for combustion engines to get where they are today, look where the electric cars are starting. did you see the model t do this?

I am a BIG gearhead and am 100 percent for gas engines, and the joy of the sound of a v8 but i got to admit that is pretty sick.

You fail to grasp that this is pretty much the first completely electric drag racing car... You would be pretty naive to think in another 2-5yrs they wouldn't be-able to tackle the top-speed issue and improve acceleration numbers even more...As the video showed it destroys pretty much any street legal car...In any regard its impressive...
