Rear output diff seal replacement cost?

Hi,

Took my car for a service at an independent garage last week and they said my rear diff is leaking oil, he doesn’t repair it but I’ve taken to a bmw specialist and said needs a new rear output seal. Quoted £400 + VAT so £480 total to replace both and add new oil. To me this sounds expensive considering seals are like at most £20 I’m guessing.

Also, is anyone on here able to check my VIN on the AOS system to see if my Indy garage has input my service on there. They advised they did this but it’s not appearing on my idrive.

Any help appreciate thanks

The axles have to be removed from the diff to replace the seals, so there is a fair amount of labor involved.
480 pounds sounds fair to me.

Agree it sounds reasonable.

GBP100 / hour for labor x 3.5 hours = GBP350
+ GBP50 for the part and oil
= GBP400

Labor = lift vehicle, drain oil, remove axle, remove old seal, install new seal, install axle, fill oil, lower vehicle, clean up, test drive, paperwork

Seems expensive considering a used diff will cost half that price.

Is that the going rate for labour these days?

USD200/hr is in the ballpark for luxury car dealer labor in the US. So GBP100/hr might be a bit light. But in the ballpark.
