Upgraded from an E90 325xi to a 2012 e92 335i. First Impressions.
Wow is really all I can say.
My 325xi was my first BMW and after 8 years of ownership I knew that it would certainly not be my last. To be honest I was pretty content with the power and especially the handling. It's a great drivers car - fantastic in all conditions and I loved the smooth and linear power delivery of the straight 6. But after a while I started craving more power, better noise and of course better looks. I certainly considered upgrading my E90 with BMS PBX, intake, remus exhaust, etc but after a ton of research on e90post I decided to take practically everyones advice and "just get a f***ing 335i." So I did. When I was first checking out the car I genuinely didn't think that it would be much of an upgrade from my 3. Sure the e92 had iDrive, Nav, red interior, and 2 less doors but it's really the same car right? I drove it off the lot at 3 pm today and pulled in to my garage 9 hours later. Beyond all the updated technology and features, the N55 engine is really where this thing shines. At WOT in my 325xi, the engine sounds like it's doing a lot of work but realistically you're not moving much faster than a GTI. In the 335i it's a whole different ball game. At start up it roars to life and it sounds great at idle. Very deep and no drone. When you start moving you can immediately feel the torque and the power really doesn't let up; it's almost dangerous compared to the 325xi. Also at high RPMs, especially when I let off the throttle I hear this whistling (I assume turbos?) that is absolutely intoxicating. After about 30 min of driving I decided to do the golf tee mod and simply detached that exhaust flap cable in the trunk. The difference to me was huge and definitely worth the 15 seconds. And with that long write up I say goodbye to my trusty 325 and welcome the 335. I'll end with a few questions for you guys, 1. What options do I have to make my exhaust louder? I'm worried about voiding warranty with downpipes and BMW PE seems a bit pricey for what it is. 2. What kind of radar detectors do you guys use? Is it worth it? Thanks and here are a few quick pics I snapped today. More to come. Out with the old. In with the new. |

NIce upgrade. That whistle you hear when letting off the throttle is the diverter valve releasing boost pressure.

On the radar detectors: I personally haven't used them in probably 15 years. I've been pulled over, but only gotten one ticket in that time. The detectors give you a false confidence. Don't speed: in residential zones, around blind curves, over hills, in Rosendale WI, and any time you can't see at least one mile ahead, unless you've scouted ahead of time.
95% of my driving is on the freeway though. Modern freeways are so open nowadays, I can spot one 2-3 miles out. Watch overpasses and on-ramps... When passing police on the freeway, just continue as normal, not slamming on brakes, just ease off the go button. When they are traveling the same direction, I continue to pass them (usually 7-8mph over, per GPS), and I have never been pulled over for this. If you use the car's analog speedometer, you can easily go 7 over because it is only 3-4 mph over in reality... Get your car coded to display your real DIGITAL speed in the display cluster.

I just moved from a 325(e46 though) to a 335 as well. The torque and power really is amazing.
I use a Valentine 1. I had an escort 8500 before that. The arrows really do help, they're nice for figuring out where the source of the radar is and determining if it is a false or not, also if there is more than 1 cop it lets you know. Radar detector is no replacement for being aware of your surrounding though, it definitely helps though. I also use Waze (iphone or android app) on longer trips and that is fairly reliable if you're on a well traveled road. |
