Lower Grill Removal
Hey guys.
Just trying to see if anybody if familiar with removing the gray lower grills on a non m sport front bumper. Just got my aero lip in and having it painted, but I also want to spray those grills black. Just think it would look nicer. Trying to removing the grills to spray them though. Didn't really want to tape the grills and spray them while they were on the car. I haven't really taken any time to look at these grills and see how they came off but I was wondering if anybody on here knew how to do it already. P.s. Sorry if I sounds like an idiot on the forum. I'm typing this and workin at the same time. Thanks guys. |

Theyre sorta clipped in. You have to get a small screwdrive. Push the clip in and pull at the same time. Working your away around the grill. Theres a lot of clips and its held in well.
Its pretty obvious once you see the back of the bumper/grill. I had my bumper off but it took no more than 5 mins per grill. What color is your car? I have my grills off and primed but undecided what color to do them. My car is black coupe and i also plan on getting bmw aero lip. |

I had to take the bumper off to put the black ones I bought in. My OEM ones were busted so I bought whole new lower grills.
If you're just painting them you can leave it on. Just make sure you go super anal when covering everything else up. |

I found a YouTube video of a British guy who taped his off and sponged black paint on them. He sprayed the paint into a plastic container, then dabbed the sponge in there and did his grills. I'm going to try it next weekend with gloss black paint. Wish me luck. Looks to be a 30 minute job.

I think someone has also used balloons behind the mesh to prevent spraying the intercooler. Honestly though, the front bumper only takes 15-20 minutes to remove and the end result would be cleaner.

Well I did it last weekend. Masked it off, tried different sponges and it was awful. The sponges were disintegrating in the paint and leaving fuzz on the grills.
Took a small paint brush and did it, and it came out great. I used a black, gloss paint from Pep Boys that supposedly adheres well to plastic. I'll check it from time to time to see if it needs touchup, but, at this point, I'm a happy camper! http://s1274.photobucket.com/user/ftloose259/media/2014-07-26183904_zpsa98aa69e.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1[/IMG] http://s1274.photobucket.com/user/ftloose259/media/2014-07-26192912_zps72419142.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0[/IMG] |
