Thats stupid..pay cops OT for 8 hours..to write maybe 2-3 tickets each for $150-250...not worth it IMHO.

They are referring to a "car meet" that occurred with 150 vehicles at 11pm Friday evening in a parking lot known to be frequented by street racers. It isn't exactly Bimmerfest. The Riverside area has many problems with street racing including several deaths. The article goes on to state "Twenty vehicles were even impounded due to suspected stolen parts."

I'd say the police are doing their job if they happen to catch over 13% of the vehicles with stolen parts. Not everyone was ticketed, only those with illegal modifications or stolen parts. The majority of those at the 11pm Friday night car meet were able to continue without any problem from police. The only difference is this car meet didn't end up with illegal street racing since the cops stuck around to watch. They didn't break up the car meet, they just made sure no one decided to show off their performance modifications by racing down the street - what has caused deaths of innocent drivers in the past in that town.

Its far from the end of meets. It may be the end of large gatherings of people looking to street race in Riverside and the end to selling stolen parts to fast and the furious kids in parking lots at night. But its not the end to real car meets.

This would be a non-story if no one had illegal modifications or stolen parts. The police wouldn't have ticketed anyone or towed any vehicles.

wow... i guess it also depends on the kind of "gathering" that is going on. if it looks like people are racing / people are causing a problem then thats an issue.

There was a similar bad experience on a euro\audi drive and get together in Santa Barbara some time ago. Local officials had been notified and had given their blessing. Only to have their police enforcement on overtime that weekend. The town benefited from tourist dollars as well as enforcement revenue. But it was at the expense of no return visits by many. Luckily I did not make the drive that day. And I never went back to that town (I used to visit several times a year)

+1... the word "meet" isn't very specific... if its just like a regular car show then thats fine

They did something similar to that in Houston a few years back. I don't think any tickets, except for maybe a few (for good reason probably) stood. HPD took a lot of grief for bothering the kids that were simply just in a parking lot checking out each others cars and talking.

Technically it was loitering, but the store was closed. The problem was the way they treated the situation. Putting kids in cuffs and in the back of the car for bogus reasons. Many cops were fired and others reprimanded.

If just one kid knows a good lawyer, the cops will get dealt with.

ah yeah......I believe the fine can be up to $10,000.

messing with the emissions is big bucks if caught. I use to freak out all the time with my s2000. Just make sure your inspection sticker is always valid other wise during the checkpoint stops you will be in big crap especially if there is one of those emission trucks at the stop and they make you get inspected on the spot! At least in NJ.

They do that to meets in NJ I was at one in ledgewood (Mixed cars). They troll around and dish out no front plate tickets like candy! They also did it to one in Mt. Olive...that was a VW meet.

Impounding cars for 'suspected' stolen parts is a bunch of crap.

Keeping the attendees from drag racing is legit.

They ruined the good part with the bad part.

How in the world could you tell if a part was stolen, short of serial numbers?

So how did the police determine that parts were stolen or not just by looking at the cars? Do these stolen parts have some identifying characteristic that legitimately purchased parts don't have?

i think cops should do their job and make sure no one races down the street which is dangerous but they dont need to send 50 squad cars to give fix it tickets for no front plates or window tints.... if they were REALLY so concerned for our safety and not wanting to generate income perhaps they could go around and issue a warning for everyone with illegal modifications then stick around to make sure that no one is racing on the street.

I can't believe people in here support this action. The 4th Amendment gives us allowances for reasonable search and seizure. Because the car looks like something from '2Fast2Furious' doesn't make it reasonable that parts on it are stolen. And it said "document" tickets were given out too - that means they ran the plates on every car and hand checked registration and insurance... seems like an excessive use of power to me.

I get what you are saying about street racing, but to go around to what is effectively a 'car show' and give out front plate tickets is retarded.
