Gym Contract Question

Question to anyone who's ever been a member of Gold's Gym or dealt with canceling a membership. I am current a few months into a 2 year contract and cannot stand the gym. Every day regardless of time it is packed. They sell way more memberships than the gym can handle and it's a pain in the ass to have to deal with waiting for equipment to open up every exercise for an entire workout.

That being said, has anyone had any luck getting out of their contract in the past? Any help or advice is much appreciated.

It's going to depend on the specific gym you are a member of, and frankly the laws governing your state in regards to gym contracts.

I have recently dealt with them in Texas and they were not helpful at all. The gym that my wife was a member of closed permanently and they did not notify us at all. She didn't use it much (she was about 3 months into a year contract), and we were actually out of town for a week or so when it closed. They kept charging us bi-monthly, and by the time I got around to calling them about it (about 2 months later) they admitted that they switched her membership to a gym about 8 miles away and just kept on charging us. Well I had read the contract (and Texas law) and knew that they had the right to transfer the membership if the gym is within 10 miles of another gym. My issue was that they never contacted us, they just switched the membership, expected us to call them, and kept on charging. What they really wanted is for us to forget about it and allow them to continue charging the card.

They did not refund us the dues from the time the gym closed until the time we cancelled, but they did allow us to terminate the contract prematurely.

I tried threatening them by telling them that I'd just cancel my month-to-month contract at their gym near my work, that didn't phase them (probably because the franchisee was different) but I canceled it anyway. I figured I'd hit them where it hurt, and I didn't really use the gym that much anyway.

Long story short, I think you're going to have a hard time canceling.

Doctor's note is a sure fire method. The actual weight of the contract depends entirely on your state's laws. LA Fitness's contract is pretty much pointless in FL.

I've heard about both of those methods from several friends and think the doctor's note may be easier than trying to change my address.

I don't know how involved they get in looking to an address but I would assume at the very least you have to provide some mail showing the new address. I would never have signed up for such a lengthy contract had I known that the person who sold it to me was lying about what it takes to cancel.

You didn't get a 7 day pass first to try it out? Gold's gym out here is pretty strict about terminating contracts. I had to wait it out, since there was no way I was moving or being able to get a Dr's note. Also same thing happened to my nearest Gold's gym a couple months before my contract was over they started these new memberships where it is $9.95/mo and you can bring a friend with you everyday, and its a pretty small facility so you can imagine the chaos in there.

Try going right when they open or an hour before they close. Going right after work is brutal. I went to Golds for years - they are good gyms. More strength-training oriented than cardio. When I went to cancel (I was month-to-month; no contract), I had to do it during business hours with their corporate HQ - couldn't do anything locally.

I signed up for a 1-year at Boston Sports Club to avoid a massive start-up fee and they got rid of a ton of equipment to make room for a CrossFit area (that nobody uses). I'm just toughing it out until September; will definitely take advantage of a free trial next time.

Find out what the cancelation fee is - you might have to eat it. Better to get out now and find a better gym than to pay monthly and not use it.

Doctors note or changing address are the only two options I think you'll have a chance with. Especially if they seem to be very popular, they won't care about you, they'll just continue to push more memberships.

The last gym I was a member of was a smaller operation, but it was month to month so I could stop at any time. Wasn't too bad of a place, but I stopped going because I moved way out of town and it was a pain in the butt to get there. Got some weights and bands, a pull up bar, and my two legs at home for pretty much everything I need.
