Out of my element on this one, since I normally don't shoot people...

I like it, has a bit of a 3D feel to it.

Wow, how'd you get it to grab focus on such small and moving subjects? Nicely done.

Thanks guys! It was taken at one of my favorite spots, Coyote Hills Regional Park, on the east shore of SF bay.

The 3D look is due to the compression of the 420mm effective length. Those hills are quite a ways behind the ducks. And while I would to take personal credit as a focusing expert, the sharpness is mainly due to the awesomeness of the 1D MkIV and 300mm 2.8 (with a 1.4tc). Also I was using a wimberly head on my tripod, and it is really good for tracking birds in flight.

Ahhh right, always forget about the compression.

I was out by the train tracks near my house on Sunday and saw this guy out hunting. It is a white-tailed kite. They hunt by hovering in place over a field looking for rodents to snack on.

Beautiful kite shot.

I wish that we had those in Colorado. The nearest thing that we have are the Northern Harriers, but even those are a bit rare. I thought that I had a pair in one of my regular spots, but they seem to have moved on.

Ollie

Canon 70-300L + Kenko 2x TC for 600mm f11. Manual focus using Liveview and 10x zoom. MSNR at ISO 25600 @ 1/20sec. No tripod, but camera resting on the arm of my recliner. Couple of table lamps for light.

Damn Mark that is impressive.

It turns out I have a "Kenko 1.5x Supertele DG" that has been lying around unused. I also have the 70-300 IS USM (non L) so I may try out this whole TC / autofocus thing. Seems like you are pushing the envelope on the 6D with the MSNR and the TC's - but that shot of your cat Ollie is seriously impressively clean and sharp.

Now, where the hell do I find a cat?

Thanks, David. That was manually focused. Liveview at 10x zoom really makes spot-on focusing easy, if you have the luxury of time. Still, for a 2x TC and that high ISO, I was a bit stunned it came out so sharp.
