Never use UPS

I have had so many problems with them in the past and I was rather concerned when I ordered a new computer and it said it would be shipped via UPS. Well I was right in being worried. After waiting all day for the package that had a scheduled date of May 15th (yesterday) my boyfriend called UPS on several occasions last night and this morning and finally was told that my computer is "lost" and I am going to have to contact Dell to get a new one. Now I have to wait a maximum 8 days for them to build a new one but they claim it will be shipped next day. UPS stinks.

Absolutely, always go FedEx or DHL!! Butbeing from Memphis and family and friends emplyed at FedEx I learn there. Odd how one of my college scholarships was from UPS though . So I had FedEx and UPS helping to pay for my education .

But on topic yes I have had several problems with UPS personally. I think I have only had one package delayed once with FedEx. Also use DHL a lot for business and few complaints there either.

I will never use fedex. I sent a framed game Jersey and the frame was damaged during the shipment...

I had insurance, but fedex said they needed to investigate...they picked up the item...and after a few days told me that "Sports Collectibles" are not covered by the insurance policy, they gave me $150 and never returned my game jersey, which was valued at over $1000...The shipping on the item was $78 with insurance...they bought a signed game jersey for $72...

I'm taking them to court...

FEDEX IS THE WORST EVER...

I hate UPS, too. I have had several items damaged by UPS in the past. Last summer I ordered an LCD monitor that was completely damaged by them. The package had already been accepted by the front desk. When I got the box, I noticed a slight crunch on the corner with a small hole (maybe 1 inch in diamter).

However, after opening the box I notice that the packing foam on that corner was completely destroyed, there was severe damage to the corner of the monitor and there was a huge gash across the screen of the monitor. It looked like a metal pipe had stabbed through the corner of the box, broke the corner of the monitor, scraped up the screen, and shattered the glass in the process.

Overall, I would say that almost 1/3 of the items I have recieved via UPS have been damaged. I have actually stopped buying from companies that don't offer shipping options other than UPS.

Yup, same here. The company I work for had MAJOR problems with Fedex. I'm talking like 20% of packages being damaged, it was fucking unbelievable.... holes punched right through packages, etc... We we seriously wondering if some disgruntled ex-employee was working at the depot or something it was so bad.

They switched to UPS and it has been smooth sailing so far. DHL is flakey too, I sent a package to NY that NEEDED to be there overnight (we're talking Montreal-NY - not far at all). We track the thing the next day because it didn't arrive and it's in California!!??

Brown

Once had a printer delivered. There was this Boom-boom-boom-boom as the UPS delivery guy came up the steps to my apartment. Then a pause (I assume he was checking the address), then CRASH! as he dropped the box on my doorstep. This was back in dot-matrix days and the continuous feed never quite lined up correctly. This happened over 15 years ago. Since then, I have tracked and recieved many non-fragile items via UPS without difficulty, but I prefer FedEx.

I had an issue with DHL with them delivering a stereo receiver to a "mysterious" address in my neghborhood (not mine) and then claiming that it was indeed delivered to me

it got figured out, but it was a pain (and a friend of a DHL driver has a nice new receiver now)

When comparing DHL, Fedex and UPS, yea I would say UPS sucks. But generally, UPS arent that bad. But Fedex seems to have more common-sense employees than UPS haha!

Whats that supposed to mean? Dell makes fine computers for what they are. In an environment when computer technology is changing very rapidly, there is no reason to not buy a low priced solution. And Dell's aren't always the cheapest in any case, for example, if you pay retail, it is the same price as the other major manafacturers.

I'd rather keep a dell for 2 years and pay 50-60% now, and then donate it, get a tax deduction, and buy another, newer technology dell in 2 years then to buy an IBM or whatever you may be thinking and keep it for 4-5 years. There warranty is fine.

I've been building computers for 12 years. I stopped 5 years ago because dell was really churning out some deals where it would cost me more to build it myself. That, plus a free warranty on parts (if a mb frys, etc.) makes it a no brainer for me.

SOrry for the problems, but nothing is perfect, things happen with all shippers, and most are cleared up in time. Good luck with your computer.

Good luck getting them to honor any kind of warranty! My parents business was ran on dells and the damb thing froze up 8months old and they told us it was due to user error not covered under warranty!
WTF! FUCK DELL! The 2computers sat on for maybe 6hours a day and were only running 3 programs only! I personnaly will never buy a DELL!
Id rather build me a computer for maybe 200$more and it will blow any dell out the water for 4years straight..So u can buy 2dells every 2years but do the math bud your wasting money! DEll is the biggest pile of shit computer next to Gateway!

listen man, i am not sure of your parents situation, but i have owned 12 dell desktops and 2 laptops. They do honor their warranty, they even came to my house to replace a motherboard that got flood damage (i cleaned it up so they couldn't tell). And that was with the free, plain jane warranty. They do run into problems, but i can honestly tell you that that is the nature of computers. They use okay parts, not the best, not the worst either. Parts can fail, but thats what the warranty is for.

There are so many variables to this ADHD. What programs were your parents running, were there any downloaded apps that could have hd malware/viruses or something? As a former computer tech for an internet startup, i will admit, 90% of the times a computer failed was due to user error. It would get very frusturating when a user would download some free "exotic destinations screensaver" or the "latest" messaging program, and mess it up. I had to go and clear their stuff, and hopefully wouldn't have to do a full re-format.

All i'm saying in this is, you can get problems in any scenario. IF you really want an uber reliable machine, then yeah, go get an asus motherboard, slower, cooler running hard drives, raid array, mushkin memory, and chock up on all the anti-virus/computer protection stuff and don't give it internet access. keep plenty of fans running in there, put the most mature operating system (not necessarily the latest), or unix on their. But these things come at costs, both financial, and if you run unix the cost of less compatability, etc. Dell is good at what they do, make affordable, average quality computers.

And by the way, i'm still running a Gateway Pentium I from 1996. I've opened it many times and was surprised at the quality parts they used. A+ parts/brand names. Even the monitor is still nice, it is a Vivitron with sony trinitron, flat crt tube. (machines were built better back then though, no denying. less plastic parts.)

If you would like you can post your problems here, maybe i can assist you (if you still need the help).
