Mini is an awsome car and can be done ungirly, however, it is a bit gayish in stock form for a MAN to drive..:/ still a great car though.

however, since it's for your son (and u no how cruel HS kids can be), i would get him a used WRX or Civic. 350z is great but insurance is high and too much power w/rwd for a 16 eyar old. WRX is VERY reliable, in fact, much more reliable than Mini or any German cars for that matter...it's pretty quick and can be made fast, has AWD. and did i mention that they are very reliable? i wish i had an WRX when i was 16.

civic is also a great choice for a 16 year old, but i'd take WRX over it.

Is it a girly car? That's what my son thinks.

He wants something along the lines of a used WRX, 350z, Civic, etc. But financing those cost more money and plus to maintain them will cost extra knowing they are out of warranty.

Now, what would you guys do? Can he make it look like a sleeper? Can you get over the girly vibe with car?

He is 50/50 with the idea,

any thoughts you guys?
your first concern should be your incensitive title, what kind of father are you when you come to an internet forum and ask if car is too gay for your 16 year old son. Talking like the 17 year olds here doesn't make you sound cool, it makes you sound ignorant.

I have a gay relative you drives an M3 so is that a gay car?
I know a gay women who has a 6spd Cooper S so yep it must be a gay car.

you should have a talk with yourself before you buy your son any car.

Do you really need a car to validate your masculinity?

Mini is gay IMO. Mini and smart cars are in the same category and 90% of them are women who drive them and 10% gay guys.

I vote totally NOT gay. My first car was an RSX Type S and that got called a girl car sometimes so its all relative. Point is... if you can get him into modding you can make just about anything look cool and the Mini is already a cool car lol.

Chill out f-ag lover. 'Gay' to the majority of the population also means unwanted, stupid, ***-like, or even happy. Go protest in San Fran

The Mini is aboslutely not a gay car. Sure, in America there are generally more women in them vs men because of what I'd call a rounded bug-like effect, but as you've seen here they can be made very manly very easily (just a drop?). Having an E30, I love tiny little sport cars on the roadway since I'm shorter than one in stock form Just remember if you decide to get him one be sure to order some of those flower hubcaps you see on the VW Beetle's. I'm sure he'll love that.

You really want to say I am judging and whatnot?

Also learn to spell.

I guess someone has a sensitive spot for anything with the word "gay".
How the hell did your relatives sexual preference come into this?

But to the topic...
And, I actually looked into the Mazdaspeed3, looks like a good candidate.

I am getting the loan but my son will be paying for it. Including gas and insurance.

My son is turning 17 in February and is in Junior league drifting team locally and tracks my car with me in it. I can confidently say he drives better than me when it comes to down to it, so the whole idea with too much power is nothing big here.

Also, another thing to think about here is I have my son interests in heart and I know how cruel high school can be. Just in my son's best interest.

Only real reason I am considering it is because of the payments.

Thanks guys.

I just bought one, my M3 wasn't a daily driver, and the first test drive I took made me feel like a was driving a go kart, there are no gay cars (except for the beetle) and MINI rocks, it has all the nice things about BMW plus all the history behind them, while their not that small anymore it still is an icon in automobiles.

My friend just got a stock Mazdaspeed 3; he has burned many cars on the track. He is a very technical driver too (always talks about setups) and loves the car. You can't go wrong

Generally, since it's for your son to drive, it's better to get him what he likes, but within reason. Because there's no point giving him a car that he doesn't like. He'll not appreciate it as much as he should.

But since he's only 16, what I would do is to come up with a list of cars that fit the requirements (safety, price, roominess, performance, etc.), and then let the kid choose from the list.

Good luck!

Hey, not sure if you're still open to new things on the table, but what about the Volvo C30? It's a two-door hatchback, safe, reliable ('09 version at least). It's pretty new in the US...
