Plasti dipping E93 roof

Afternoon brothers and sisters

I had my roof wrapped matte black a while back but I really didn't like the end result. Looked good from far but shit up close. Then I thought. Plasti dip. So I'm giving that ago. Here are a few pics of the process starting out. Current wrap, removed, first coat and second coat. Currently drying before the final coat. It's very coarse at the moment. Hopefully the 3rd coat will smooth out. Just the rear pillar for now. Have to say its a lot more matte then the vinyl and looking the colour.

I'm keen for any tips mate. That 3rd coat came out very textured. Like grit. Gonna try a thick 4th coat tomorrow

The farther away you spray the dip, the more texture it will have. If you want a smoother surface try spraying in quick light coats at minimal range. Lots of light passes from closer will give you a smoother look

After 4 coats this is the result. If there is a technique I can use to avoid the stroke lines that would be good. If someone could help out. Second pic shows the comparison between real vinyl and plasti dip. Note the patch job. Haha

I think paint or vinyl by a better company than before is best. Plastidip seems very amatuer to me.

but well dine for giving it a go.

The gritty texture is from holding the can too far from the surface, and some of the dip drying before it hits. If you add more coats on top of that, it'll build the grit rather than smooth it out. Not sure if you re-did it or what, but just a tip.

So after a week of rain. Game on. First coat down. You see the original vinyl. First coat. And 2 areas that I've experimented with trying to get the streaking down. Seems to have worked.

Just wanted to close this out. Basically it was a failure. Just couldn't get the streaks out. So unless your a wizz on a pressure pack I wouldn't attempt this. On an upside I painted my rear callipers and lug nuts gold. Came out sexy. I'll post something up on the wheels section for that

You need an HLVP sprayer. There's no way you're going to avoid the striping on that large of a surface with cans. Remember after the first or second coat you want to lay down thick wet coats. Plasti dip isn't paint it takes a lot before it runs.

If you did this with an HVLP sprayer like the Dipyourcar one it would come out perfect.

I had a similar thought but I can't get tubs of the plastic dip here. Just the pressure packs. Will get it wrapped one day
