Disappointed at Mercedes Lineup

I was bored last night so I was looking at MB's website. I have to say. I'm very disappointed by their lack of offerings in the $40k range that has decent engine under the hood. The thing that appealed to me the most about my 135i is that it has a good balance of luxury, power and sportiness. All this with a price tag slightly higher than $40k.

While MB has very nice looking cars (like the SLK and the new CLA), it cost an arm and a leg if you want anything decent under the hood. Most of the time if you have opt for the AMG version.

Lets have a look (prices shown are starting prices w/ no options)

Model / Price / HP / Torque / 0-60 time

135i / $40k / 300hp / 300trq / 5.0 sec

CLA250 / $30 / 208hp / 258trq / 6.9 sec
CL45 / $47 / 355hp / 332 / 4.4 sec
The CLA is a very nice looking car. Shitty its front wheel drive and slow (CLA250). No option for manual for either one. And if you add a few options to the CL45, you are easily over $50k =(

C250 / $38k / 201hp / 229trq / 7.1 sec
C350 / $44k / 302hp / 273trq / 5.9 sec
C63 / $63k / 451hp / 443trq / 4.4 sec
Not the best looking car in the world. The only one that comes close to the 135i is the C350. Even then its about a second slower and $5k more expensive

SLK350 / $56k / 302hp / 273trq / 5.4 sec
SLK55 / $69 / 415hp / 398trq / 4.5 sec

I think the SLK350 is probably my favorite car out of the MB line up (with the CL45 being second) in an affordable price rage. Too bad its about $16K more than my 135i =(

There is really no point to this post, LOL. Just ranting.... Thanks for listening. Haven't really looked at Audi in terms of their offerings.

MB will never sell a performance car in the sub $40k range. You are not their target customer.

I've always felt that Merc targeted buyers who preferred looks over performance and BMW targeted performance over looks. Not that either brands lack either of the two, but one a bit more than the other

I think the C250 is a great looking car, and if I had to have a 4-door daily driver, I'd be tempted. But then I saw that it was 220 hp, 3600 lbs, had marginal MPG, and only came in an 8-speed auto. No thanks.

I totally agree. The main target market for MB is 40+ that makes really good money. But MB is trying to attract the younger professional market (Late 20s to 30s professional male). I mean look at the new CLA250 commercial with Willem Dafoe playing the devil

It is clearly targeting younger professionals. I would think MB will have a few sporty cars in their line up priced at around $40k that can do better than 0-60 in 7secs.

Over 40 and make decent money but yeah, the MB line doesn't interest me that much. Most are bloated and overwrought designs. Good straight line performance but not as good at BMW and Audi on a road course.

I'd take an Audi R8 if anyone offered me one for free.

Taking a free R8 doesn't say much. I would pretty much trade any current BMW model for a R8 v10.

I would drive an Audi Gallardo, too.

As for MB, I think the CLA looks pretty cool, but it's getting *horrible* reviews from everyone who drives or owns it. I've personally only seen them from the outside. The only MB I have any wheel time behind is an S-class (S550) which was .. different, but awesome. The target audience of the 'reasonably priced' MBs is quite obviously the label whores - the same people who Louis Vuitton luggage and watch keeping up with the Karashians.

The '15 W205 C-Class is nearly available now, although it isn't on the MB USA website yet.

There will be a C400 (rivals: 335i, S4, ATS 3.6, etc.) with a 3.5-liter turbo V6 that produces 329 hp and 354 lb-ft.

The new C300 (rivals: 328i, A4, ATS, etc.) will have 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder producing 235 hp and 273 lb-ft.

Except the current LCI W204 C63, which is faster around the 'ring than the E9X M3 by 4 seconds.

W204 C63: 8:01.00

E9X M3: 8:05.00

The current E63 turned in a 7:55 time at the 'ring (matching the new M5).

The driving dynamics on the AMG cars have improved substantially since about '11-'12.

I feel the same but with AUDI group.
If you want any type of performance------------->RS models that start at $70K

The BMW line is even more disappointing. Only the new M3/M4 something good I expect. All the rest is not worth. The next thing might hopefully be the new 7 Series.

What's even more frustrating was the fact that Audi didn't even bring the RS4 to the States this last time around.

Twin Turbo V6 in the C400 is looking very enticing.

This.

I personally love the 2015 C400, it's very possible it will be my next car.

I could have said a Vette but then I'd be slandered about my manhood.
