Porsche 911 GTS

Hey guys my brother is in the market for a sports car. He thinking of getting the GTS 6-speed. Does anyone know if the transmission is any good since Porsche seems to be focusing on the PDK. Is it the 6speed or the 7-speed??

You could also just check the Porsche website... it's a 7-spd manual. It's from Porsche, so I'm betting it's just fine.

Porsche makes both the best manual transmission on the market. PDK is also the best dual clutch too so youre in good hands either way.

997 GTS was 6 speed and 991 is 7 speed.

Hi Bomex,
I ordered my GTS a few weeks ago and I test drove both the PDK and the manual 991 again. I started a thread on that at rennlist.
Briefly, I decided to go with the manual. PDK is great etc but I am a manual guy.
On the 991 manual. It is the PDK box modified to be manual and from this fact I initially though (before trying it) that it would not be very good comparing to the dedicated 6speeds in the past.
When I tried it I was completely sold! Very smooth, fast, clean shifts, closest you can get to the Honda S2000 trany. Maybe the best manual on the market right now. (for street use it is better than the GT3RS manual!! which I like and better than the e92 manual by a long shot) Keep in mind that the GTS manual is somewhat "improved" on the reg. 991 manual, based upon some articles. I do not know the actual changes, likely involving the shift linkage??
Anyway it will be the last and maybe the best P-car manual??!!

Autocar has good review of the new 991 GTS on youtube. Steve didn't think it was as big of step up in peformance as the Cayman GTS to the Cayman S.

Can't really compare. The one he tested was the C4GTS, it is heavier and doesn't have the pure RWD handling. And compared to the Turbo it does not have RWS.

Hard to compare when the Cayman GTS is the highest in the Cayman line whereas the 911 GTS still has to contend with comparisons to the GT3.

997 GTS is a 6 speed MT, 7 speed PDC (DCT). Great car.

Correction the entire 991 family of 911 (including the GTS) has a 7 speed PDK derived manual gearbox.

The GTS is nothing special. It is a regular 991 CS2 or C4S with the wide body and the power pack and some cosmetic upgrade on 10mm lowered suspension and slightly reworked manual box. The PDK is unchanged. It is cheaper however than the similarly equipped C2/4S!!
To me the C4S in the original 991 line up felt better than the C2S?? Maybe the increased front weight? It felt more planted.

I had a 991 C4S, amazing machine.

If you want a manual, get one now. 991.2 will have a 3.0L TB motor and the pdk will be a big part of thst equation to make the engine work. I can see Porsche phasing out the manual on the 911.

When you have a dual clutch as good as PDK...not really suprising; and to boot the take rates on the manual (which we all know if the best on the market) is only maybe 5%.

As an aside, cannot wait to see the GT3 RS. Looks like it will likely have a 525 hp 4.0 liter and be a bit lighter. Going to be insane considering how good the 991 GT3 is.

My 991 was a PDK, completely ruined the car for me. Double clutch are great, but in a sports car I need a manual.
PDK is great, but def not for me if I have the choice.

+1. Thought about the PDK a lot, but chickened out and ordered the manual.
PDK just a little bit boring. Maybe when I get pissed by the new GT3 or RS passing me on track I switch.

I have a 991 GT3, the PDK-S is great on the track but agree on the manual. The thing I hate about the porsche pdk system is the selector is exactly like an auto. You have to move it over to go into manual mode (at least if u want it to stay there). I had the PDK on a 991 C2S I was driving for 5 months and hated it. I actually did not like the fact that the 991 manual derived from the PDK and not a "dedicated" manual. I expected not to be great. But after driving one I think it is a very very good manual. Way better than the e92 M3 manual.
I am thinking about the GT3 and the PDK-S a lot. I could potentially trade my GT3RS in and not to pay a lot more. On the track the PDK-S is surely better and I would be faster for sure. The thing is I do not know if I want to be faster. I am OK now (not being on the track, not driving) if someone is faster. On the other hand if I get passed by some friends or wife on track, just because they have the PDK I am sure I will have to have one.

Unless you NEED 4WD and two back seats, I wouldn't look at the GTS considering it's the same price as a GT3. The GT3 is probably more comfortable than a GTR and that's a car I've driven quite extensively and reckon it's a bit harsh compared to most Porsches and Bmws.

I think the manual transmission option is also a draw for many which can't be had on the GT3 anymore.

I actually like the feel of the shifter in the current 6 speed cayman s vs the 7 speed in the 991, but maybe it's just me and personal preference. I think it comes down to R&D money. The bulk is being spend on the PDK a system and having the manual derived from that saved them money. Like you said it's still good and most people who want a manual won't complain, but the majority going to PDK a makes sense to spend the development money there.

I am with you on going faster, even in the M3 I find that there are not too many people you can play with at lapping days even in the advanced/instructor group. Many are going dedicated or spec racing in lower horsepower cars. I am thinking the new cayman gt4 may be the way to go and even then it will probably be very quick and capable. I guess that is what chumpcar racing is for.
