Thumbs up They don't make teachers like this any more.

My 9th grade English teacher turned 100 the other day. She's still doing well. I remember she looked like a grandma when she was my teacher almost 40 years ago. She was over 60 then, so I guess that explains it. My grammar and writing skills can be directly attributed to her incredible ability to teach and make you understand. Sadly, that sort of teaching skill has gone by the wayside.

Here's to you, Mrs. Driscoll.

Thats because now a days teachers are people who graduated college and couldn't get any other job. I know at least 10 people who graduated with me that are now teachers. None of them do it because they love teaching.

I remember that clock. Very clearly. I felt guilty every time I stole a glance at it.

There are a lot of other issues as well. When I was in school I would have been horrified if I had screwed up and my parents were notified. My parents *would not* have blamed the school. They would have tanned my hide. These days parents instantly think the school is picking on their kid. The complete lack of discipline at home and the litigious atmosphere in this country which keeps the schools from enforcing anything has allowed the students to do as they wish. Tough being a teacher these days.

One of our history teachers was the baseball coach. He kept a softball in his desk. He had one of the school's wise-asses in his class. One day the punk started acting up and the teacher gave him three steps toward the door before he nailed him with the softball. The punk didn't make it. Another teacher, who was the only African American teacher I had through school, flipped one of those one-piece desks with the student still in it. The student had called him the n-word. No action was taken against either teacher. As far as I know, neither student even bothered reporting the incidents. It was just the way it was back then.

Yeah, and I'm feeling really old. Although I'm more than 10 years younger than she was when she taught me, so it's all relative.

*L* It's all relative. Very cool article, makes it even better that you personally had a chance to experience her teaching.

What I hate is when you bump into an elementary or Jr HI teacher and they still remember you.

Bad sign..

My Grandfather was a history teacher a long time ago.... he was known for throwing erasers at people when he caught them talking in class.

These were old school chalk board erasers that were most likely full of chalk dust, so people were more or less "marked" for the rest of the day. LOL.

We would have smarter children if parents would still discipline them.
