Two races left until possible second title; Marquez previews Misano

Having returned to the top step of the podium at Silverstone, MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez aims to secure another win this weekend at Misano.

Marquez, winner of 11 of the 12 races held to date, gave no option of victory to his rivals at the most recent round in England and is back at his best heading to a track where one year ago he placed second.

The runaway series leader has won three times at Misano in the smaller classes and a MotoGP triumph on Sunday at the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini would edge him closer to defending his title.

“It was nice to be back on the top step of the podium in Silverstone, the team did a great job the whole weekend,” commented the Repsol Honda rider. “Now we head to Misano which is a smaller and slower track compared to others on the calendar. We will have to work hard from Friday to get the setup on the bike just right, to suit the demands on braking at this twisty track and let’s hope the weather is also nice.”

Dani Pedrosa, second in the overall standings, also knows what it takes to win at Misano, where he took the victory, pole position and fastest lap in 2010.

“I’m looking forward to Misano this weekend,” Pedrosa stated. “There is always a nice crowd over the three days and a good atmosphere with the Italian fans. Hopefully we’ll have good weather from the Friday and get things going in the right direction. It’s a short lap but intense with many overtaking points and it's quite bumpy, so set up is key. Let’s hope for an exciting race."

Marquez gunning for Doohan record

Fresh from his 11th victory of the season, Marc Marquez heads into this weekend's race at Misano looking to equal one of MotoGP's long-standing records.

After tasting defeat for the first time this season at the Brno round on 17 August, the defending world champion returned to winning ways at the British MotoGP at Silverstone last time out.

That took his tally to 11 wins from 12 races this campaign, leaving him just one victory short of equalling Mick Doohan's all-time record of twelve wins in a season, which was set back in 1997.

Despite being on the verge of another piece of history, the 21-year-old Spaniard knows he will have his work cut out for him in San Marino.

"It was nice to be back on the top step of the podium in Silverstone. The team did a great job the whole weekend," he said. "Now we head to Misano which is a smaller and slower track compared to others on the calendar. We will have to work hard from Friday to get the setup on the bike just right to suit the demands on braking at this twisty track and let's hope the weather is also nice."

His Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa, who won at San Marino back in 2010, is expecting another "bumpy" weekend at Misano.

"Hopefully we'll have good weather from the Friday and get things going in the right direction," he said. "It's a short lap but intense with many overtaking points and it's quite bumpy, so set up is key. Let's hope for an exciting race."

Remy Gardner, son of 1987 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner, is to make his grand prix debut at Misano this weekend.

The 16-year-old Australian (pictured with Wayne in 2012) usually races in the Spanish CEV Moto3 series for Calvo KTM, but has been called up by the Kiefer Kalex KTM team to replace the injured Luca Grunwald.

“I wasn't expecting to be on a GP bike this weekend to be honest, but it's the perfect way to prepare for Phillip Island in October,” Gardner said.

“It's always unfortunate when someone is injured and can't compete, but I'm going to grab the opportunity with both hands and make the most of it.

“I'm hoping to learn as much as I can this weekend and it will be great experience for me. I'm not going to put any pressure on myself. As long as I know I've done my best I'll be satisfied. ”

---------------------------and another from crash ------------------------------
After a disappointing 16th in his home Silverstone MotoGP round, Aspar stand-in Leon Camier hopes a 'very clear plan' will see him back in the points at Misano this weekend.

The San Marino Grand Prix will be the Englishman's fourth appearance in place of the injured Nicky Hayden and potentially his last, with the American targeting a return to the Open class Honda at the following Aragon round.

“I rode at Misano for three years in World Superbikes and it is quite a strange track,” said Camier. “It is demanding, with some hard braking, some tight and slow corners, and we are going to have to work very hard to adapt the set-up of the bike.

“We struggled to get on the pace at Silverstone, maybe because we went the wrong way with the set-up at the start of the weekend and never managed to recover.

“We have a very clear plan for Misano, we know which direction we need to go in for me to continue learning about this category and this bike. I'll try to complete as many laps as I can and hopefully we can show our best on Sunday.”

With his home town of Tavullia less than 10km from the Misano Circuit, this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix marks Valentino Rossi's local MotoGP round.

“When the season arrives at the Misano Grand Prix, I'm always very happy," commented Rossi. "For me it is a really special GP. First because it's only ten kilometres from my house in Tavullia and here is my family, all my friends and my fans. Then because Misano is my track, I love this place."

On his return to the factory Yamaha squad last year Rossi finished a disappointed fourth at Misano, 15s off the pace of his race winning team-mate Jorge Lorenzo. This season Rossi comes to his home round in much better form and a genuine contender to win for the first time since last year's Dutch TT.

Last time at the British Grand Prix, Rossi took a hard fought podium and closed the championship gap to Dani Pedrosa to just ten points. This weekend the Italian admits it will be crucial to hit the ground running from the start of Free Practice:

"We will try to prepare the bike perfectly, from the first day. I want to stay in front and try to fight with Jorge and Marc. At Silverstone I went again on the podium and here I want to do the same thing. I'll do my best. I hope the weather will be good, even during the first practice. It will be important to work in dry conditions to prepare the bike. I'm ready for the Misano Grand Prix!”

Rossi is currently third in the championship, as the top Yamaha rider and just ten points from Dani Pedrosa.

according to number seven in the UK, it goes on for Stefan Bradl and his colleagues MotoGP this weekend on the Adriatic coast. The San Marino Grand Prix is not only for the Germans a little highlight, but especially for his LCR Honda team enormously important, which is in Italy at home. "Misano is another exciting track for me and it's nice to be here, because the Italian fans are amazing," said Bradl.

Bradl admired the passion of the Italians. "You have a lot of racers who support them and they continue to celebrate Simoncelli's memory, which is something very emotional," he continued. Bradl is expecting a successful weekend. "The race is also important for my team, but I do not feel any pressure., I was on this route since my debut in the premier class soon, so I'm optimistic."

MotoGP boss: ‘Important’ Valentino Rossi is racing on
September 10, 2014 MCN.com

Never underestimate the power and influence of nine-times world champion Valentino Rossi.

Marc Marquez might be rapidly emerging as the new poster boy of MotoGP with a string of record-breaking performances.

But racing’s number one box office attraction remains Italian icon Rossi.

That’s why MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta was thrilled recently when the 35-year clinched a new two-year contract to ride a factory Yamaha YZR-M1 until the end of the 2016 world championship.

Rossi has been the talisman for MotoGP ever since he moved to the premier class with Honda back in 2000 and Ezpeleta told MCN: “It is so important to have him for another two years. I spoke with Valentino and he is very happy to go on. Some people have said he is here just to make money but in the first race in Qatar he was on the podium and he has been strong all season. When he told me he was renewing with Yamaha I could see in his face that he wanted to stay in MotoGP."

"Personally Valentino thinks he can win more races and maybe a championship. The age in Valentino’s head is not the same as his body. Physically he is no worse than five years ago, so it is his mentality that is the most important to give him the performance. Mick Doohan said to me many times that the most important thing in this sport is the mind and nothing else. I still see that Valentino has the mentality to win and believes in himself that he can do it.”

Rossi broke the premier class record in the last race at Silverstone with his third in the British GP marking his 246th MotoGP race.

A fourth place or higher in his home race at Misano on Sunday and he will become the first rider in history to score 5000 points or more.

Where can the Yamahas beat Marc Marquez and Honda to a MotoGP race win in 2014?

Honda have routed the men in blue this season, Marc Marquez sweeping to 11 wins while Dani Pedrosa picked up the crumbs when the wunderkind had a bad day in Brno.

There is a very real risk that Yamaha could go the season winless. The last time that happened was in 2003, when Valentino Rossi was still a Honda man, Jorge Lorenzo was in his second-year as a 125cc rider, and the all-conquering Marquez was celebrating his 10th birthday.

First Free Practice was fun and done!

Main results: Yonny Hernandez took the opportunity and went for something better circumstances his fastest lap, 1.693 seconds ahead of Marc Marquez which earned him the best. Andrea Dovizioso was third ahead of Stefan Bradl and the second man Danilo Petrucci surprise. Aleix Espargaro finished sixth ahead of Andrea Iannone and Pol Espargaro. Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa were only ninth and tenth, Jorge Lorenzo had to settle even with twelfth place.

The incidents: After the many falls in Moto3 training were the MotoGP riders in their first session like flies. Bradley Smith opened the fall festival right on his out lap, when he went into turn eight on the ground. A little later Karel Abraham crashed in Turn 3 with Yonny Hernandez and also had in the gravel. A little later, Hiroshi Aoyama followed in the target curve and Aleix Espargaro in Turn 4 Shortly after Andrea Iannone and Pol Espargaro slipped almost simultaneously from under braking for the first corner and ended up in the outlet zone. Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow also took off a little later. So you counted for a third of the training not less than eight falls, which is why a large part of the field retired to the pits to wait for better conditions. A few minutes before the end of Danilo Petrucci was still thrown violently from his ART.

Weather: The drivers of the premier class had to grapple with the harshest conditions on their first free practice at Misano. The heavy rain that had begun in the early hours of the morning, stopped, got even stronger during the session and set the track literally under water. The track surface at Misano is particularly slippery when such conditions, which explains the many falls in the first session. 16 degrees outside and track temperature did the rest to.

The analysis: A look at the timesheets reveals that one in Misano should not overestimate this first free practice of the MotoGP. Place one for Yonny Hernandez, fifth for Danilo Petrucci, Jorge Lorenzo only P12 - that will definitely look different on Sunday. This first session was maximized to good to gain experience at this track in wet conditions.
