MotoGP: Gran Premio Movistar de Aragón

I shouldn't have to tell anyone how excited I am about Valentino winning that last race after about a year and at his home track no less. But if I do have to tell anyone, here you go:
I AM SUPER EXCITED THAT THE DOCTOR WON A RACE AT HIS HOME TRACK. IT'S BEEN WAY, WAY TOO LONG.

Yamaha is putting a lot of pressure on Repsol right now and rightfully so, titles are on the line. How much pressure? Enough for Marquez to push just a fraction past that limit and lay down his bike on the tightest corner of the track. But that was Italy.

Let's talk about Spain. Next stop: Aragon.

Circuit info
Length: 5.078 m / 3.155 miles
Width: 15m
Left corners: 10
Right corners: 7
Longest straight: 968 m / 0.601 miles
Constructed: 2009
Laps: 23:
Distance: 116.8 km - 72.6 miles

Introduction:
An ultra-modern facility, MotorLand Aragón had its roots firmly established thanks to a solid history of street racing in Alcañiz, which hosted events between 1963 and 2003. Safety advice warning against the continuation of this led to the proposal and construction of a sporting complex dedicated to motorsport.

With support from local institutions, renowned German architect Hermann Tilke was commissioned to design the facility. The circuit, which is 5.077km long and has 17 turns, was roundly praised by riders after its first Grand Prix in 2010, and it was rewarded with the IRTA Best Grand Prix of the Year award, the first time a circuit had received the prize in its debut year.

Difficulty for the braking system: <--------------LIGHT ----------------->
Only inaugurated in 2010 it is considered quite a technical and rather demanding track for brakes since, especially in the first part of the track, it does not allow the braking systems to cool properly. Despite the most demanding cut out is on Curve 7 where the motorcycles undergo a deceleration of close to -1.6 g, the most critical part is the mixed one where the sequence of smaller cut outs close together can put the brakes into crisis.

I also was very excited about Rossi win. Hoping for a repeat and hoping that he can at least end up in second this year.

Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team #04)
“Aragón is a strange track: it’s not one of my favourite circuits, but we have been going really well in the last few races this year on tracks with very different characteristics and so I also expect to go well at Aragón, just like we did at Silverstone and above all at Misano, which was a really special race. We are now becoming a more competitive reality and I am very happy with our constant progress.”

Cal Crutchlow (Ducati Team #35)
“I can take some positives to Aragón of being able to ride the bike well again during the weekend and finish the race. In terms of my riding style, I quite like the circuit, I’ve had some good battles there in the past and results haven’t been too bad. I think the more flowing corners that Aragón has got are a little bit more suited to my style anyway and we know the Ducati is good in the braking zone so hopefully we can benefit in those areas.”

Nicky Hayden:

“I am really happy to finally return to action this weekend. Racing motorcycles is not only my job but my passion and it hasn't been easy for me to miss so many races. I just focused on getting back as quickly as possible but riding a MotoGP is not something you can test your fitness for until you try it. I have been riding quite a bit of dirt-track lately but I can't say for sure how strong I am so I am looking forward to getting on the bike and seeing the results of the operation. At the moment I don't want to set any objectives other than to get back out there and see how I feel. I am looking forward to seeing the team again and I can't wait to get back to the serious work on Friday. My arm and wrist feel quite strong and the movement has improved. I didn't want to come back until I knew I had done everything I could to recover and I am happy with the result. I managed to get on the podium the first year we raced at Motorland, I quite like the circuit and it has some fun corners.”

Marc Marquez # 93
Championship Standing: 1st - 289 points
“After a disappointing weekend in Italy, it will be nice to return home to race in front of our home fans in Aragón this weekend and also my fan club will be coming! This is my favourite track of the year and we’ve had good results here in the past three years so I hope to continue this way. It has technical first and final sections, and you need to be strong in cornering, but we will be working hard from Friday to be back on top on Sunday

Dani Pedrosa # 26
Championship Standing: 2nd - 215 points
“Last year obviously wasn’t the best for me, but apart from that I've always done well in Aragón and I'm looking forward to racing in front of our home crowd again, the support is always great and gives you motivation! Obviously Marc has a huge lead in the Championship but there is only a single point between me and Valentino, so my priority is to win races and open that margin to take second in the standings.”

Valentino Rossi # 46
"Heading to Aragon after winning my home Grand Prix is really nice. We had a good race, we worked well all weekend and the result was spectacular,” commented the Italian rider.

“Now we must try to repeat what we did in Misano. The main objective is to continue like this, fighting for important positions every weekend. I am just a point behind Dani in the championship and I want to fight for this position. I also especially want to be strong everywhere. I arrived to victory at Misano step by step and we have to continue like this until the end. We are going in the right way.”

Jorge Lorenzo # 99
"Motorland is a great track but it's one of the few circuits on the calendar where I was never able to win. Over the last few years the layout seemed to be more suitable for our rivals, but I guess this season we can be closer especially because we tested there a couple of days after Montmeló so we already have some references.”

“You never know. Last year I won in Motegi, a Honda track, and it was a massive surprise. I don't see why we can't do the same thing this year at Aragon!”

“I'm still pursuing my first victory of this season and Misano again wasn't the place, but I'm not worried about it. Hopefully we can complete a good weekend at Aragon and let's see what happens!”

Rossi looking to overhaul Pedrosa

Valentino Rossi has set his sights on overhauling Dani Pedrosa at MotorLand Aragón this weekend.

The Yamaha rider, who claimed his and the team's first victory of the 2014 campaign at Misano last time out, currently occupies third in the championship standings, just a point behind Repsol Honda rival Pedrosa.

"Heading to Aragón after winning my home Grand Prix is really nice," said the seven-time MotoGP champion.

"We had a good race, we worked well all weekend and the result was spectacular. Now we must try to repeat what we did in Misano. The main objective is to continue like this, fighting for important positions every weekend.

"I am just a point behind Dani in the championship and I want to fight for this position. I also especially want to be strong everywhere. I arrived to victory at Misano step-by-step and we have to continue like this until the end."

Rossi's best finish at Motorland Aragón to date is third position, achieved at last year's event.

I wouldn't be surprised. He's got such a lead this far in to the season that just finishing now should be enough

Marquez talks about his crash at Misano:

Marc Marquez has admitted his Misano crash happened because he was determined to seal the 2014 MotoGP title at home at Aragon, and he has promised to calm his approach.

Marquez fell when challenging Valentino Rossi for the San Marino Grand Prix victory a fortnight ago, relegating him to a 15th-place finish.

It was only the second time Marquez had crashed in a race since moving up to MotoGP.

"In Misano on Sunday we were not ready to fight for the victory, but anyway I tried because my idea was to try to win the championship here at Aragon, honestly," said Marquez ahead of this weekend's third Spanish event of the season.

"But it was not possible. I took risks, I was at 100 per cent, but I was over the limit and I crashed.

"Now is the time to maybe start thinking about the championship, try to manage that advantage and to concentrate only on the championship."

Marquez's championship lead now stands at 74 points over Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa, meaning the earliest he can claim his second title is at Motegi next month.

He had been 89 points clear heading into Misano, and would have needed to be 100 in front by the end of the Aragon weekend to wrap up the crown on home soil.

He's pushing too hard because he is trying to clinch the championship. Whether it's too much lean or too many laps on the wrong tires, he's too eager.
He's talented but, to me, this is more about his immaturity (not that he is immature, but he is young). I mean, with all that Lorenzo has done, he knew enough to come in when he did and it paid off with a victory.

I agree totally.
I had an issue like this racing in 2003. I was in the lead and letting a guy push me when I should have let him go by and push him. I ended up high-siding.

There is a lot to be said about experience.

Sux about VR though.

Was anyone else baffled that they didn't show Iannone's crash? Looks like Lorenzo and he tangled up a little. He was lucky that he got off the bike when he did.

From an interview:

The seven time MotoGP champion underwent a further medical check with Dr. Michele Zasa from the Clinica Mobile this morning, after which he answered the following questions...

Q:
Valentino, how are you today?

Valentino Rossi:
“I'm fine, everything is ok, and this is the most important thing. I did not injure myself too much except for a big bump to the head. Last night I had a little headache but today I'm fine, I'm 100%. It was a real shame because before the race we made a change that would have helped me a lot; the bike was strong, I was going well, I had recovered the gap in the first few laps and I was there with the leading riders. I felt good and I am sure I could have made a good race, so it was a real shame to fall. In a way I'm almost glad because even though we had a difficult weekend on Sunday we were competitive and this was supposed to be a track that is not very good for us.”

Q:
Have you watched the race? What can you say about your crash and about your rivals' race?

Valentino Rossi:
“Unfortunately, like Iannone [who had a big accident on lap 2] I went onto the artificial grass. This is always very dangerous and especially in these cases because the track was still wet from the morning shower and there was nothing to be done. Marc and Dani tried to stay on track on the slick tyres but they took a big risk and in fact they crashed. In my case, if I had gone off track one metre before, I would have just gone wide, instead I touched the grass and I fell.”

Q:
We have a triple back-to-back ahead of us in Asia and Australia. How do you see the coming races?

Valentino Rossi:
“Now there are three races in a row, three races that are all beautiful and I know all tracks very well. I like all of them a lot. I will try to do my best as we have done in the last races.”

Rossi is now three points behind Pedrosa and just twelve ahead of Sunday's race winner Jorge Lorenzo in the fight for second in the world championship.
