How do you clear your mind?
Hi guys,
I've noticed a strange problem recently, and perhaps it has something to do with my personality... I just cannot shut down my brain for some reason. Over time, I get so exhausted, my brain does "shut down" and I can't concentrate on anything. I don't mean I just have insomnia, it's more complex... Basically, whatever I do, I find myself thinking about things perhaps too much. For example, as I type this, I think I'm a bit too close to the computer screen, I've got to move it back a bit so I don't damage my eyes. At the same time, I'm thinking about my car and the torque values for the M3 brace. Then I'm thinking about school and what I'm going to study. Sooo people might say, just get out and go for a walk or jog or something. Well, I can't do that without THINKING about it - I'll consider which way I'm going, why I'm going there, where I should be going, that the trees are a bit too high, that I should lift my legs higher while I run, that I should avoid that dog I see in the distance, etc. Similarly, when I go for a drive, it's the same thing. I can't shut off, I'm always analyzing what's going on, what is happening and what could have happened: I didn't take the ideal line through the corner, that guy got really close to me and could have hit me, the price tag for repairs would be insane, I should step on the brakes more gently so the guy behind me doesn't hit me, etc. I try to live a full life, i.e. I try to always be up to something productive and never do something just for the sake of doing it. Like I never read fiction books, it just doesn't work for me, because I soon start to feel that I'm just wasting my time/eyesight reading some small letters about something that doesn't even exist. If I watch a movie, I HAVE to think about what is going on, what should have happened or what could have happened and what I can learn from that movie (even if it's something like the Fast and Furious) It's probably worst when I go to bed, because I find I cannot sleep because of it. It's not stress, because I think about things I like doing as well (like driving the car). In the morning, I find myself getting up like an hour too early and then just lying in bed,THINKING. So I'm looking for something to do that will not require me to think about anything... any tips welcome. |

I golf, shoot guns, and smoke (not necessarily at the same time, though it could be entertaining). You are honestly over thinking your over thinking.

I don't think anyone on this forum has enough knowledge to give you proper advice. Go see a therapist and I suggest doing some yoga.

find a hobby, stick to it, the way you over analyse things will make you good at it.

Based on what you've said, you show several of the tell-tale signs of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I don't think you meet enough of the criteria to be officially diagnosed or anything, but you definitely seem to be experiencing OCD-like symptoms. When something begins to manifest itself enough to begin to detrimentally affect your daily life (like you not being able to sleep), it's officially regarded as a pathology and should be treated like any other illness. Go see a doctor, get some happy pills, enjoy your better lifestyle. Otherwise, smoke some weed to wind down (unless you're the type to get paranoid), and just chill out once in a while. Note - this is not medical advice, do not take it as such. This is just a friendly suggestion. (aka don't sue me for wrongful medical advice if I'm wrong).

007 movie marathon, or tv series if you need a longer staycation. random stuff on the internet (is irc still around?). digg used to be a good one, that site took a shit
or just surf the web... there's a lot of stuff out there. i think it's easy to get locked into your personal "online presets". youtube alone, easily 10 lifetimes worth of stuff to watch. i actually like watching starcraft 3 matches (and i don't even play). in no particular order, cycling (mountain biking preferred), shooting guns, for a while model aircraft, alcohol (after the others).
I used to wakeboard and snowboard a lot, but that has dropped off as life has marched on. Pretty much anything that required full concentration works nicely. I was having a particularly rough patch a work some time ago and lifting weights just didn't work, I couldn't shut my brain up. |

The most mind clearing thing i have done is flying RC planes. Sounds kooky but when you're flying you can't take your eyes off of the plane. You can't think about anything else, you can only think about not making a mistake that would cause you to crash.
haha, i just read MisterSkiMask's post. Good call, full concentration hobby will do it!

Would you prefer to not think about anything?? some people are just clueless, they can't take hints... it's sad. Learn to take moments for yourself only... or take a hot shower... or cold shower... it will clear your mind
