According to my GF and everyone else who is a server, it's 20% baseline is the expectation - 10% for pickup.

0 - 15% is my new scale and 20% for exceptional service.

Midwest, I don't disagree with not tipping in the scenario you described. But that different than the way my local place works... If I were simply walking in, paying a cashier who handed me a box then yes, I would not tip....

I’m gonna put a tip jar on my desk at the office. After all, I do provide exceptional accounting services.

Fair enough then, I guess thinking more about your scenario it makes a little more sense to tip as there is one person doing the majority of the serving duties.

I think we should just raise everyone's wages to $15/hr so we don't need to tip anymore.

I take MAJOR issue with this concept. They are getting paid a full wage to clean a room a particular way. If it's not done to that standard, they are doing their job improperly and should be fired. I'm not paying someone extra money to do their basic job.

The only staff I tipped in a major way was the staff at the St.Regis on Kauai. They went WAY beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and took amazing care of us.

Yes and No. We are members of the Starwood Vacation program so when staying at one of their brands we usually get greeted and treated very well as they see our patterns and spending so the extra service and perks that goes with that earns the tip. At the some other whole in the wall no.

To me tips are earned. The wifey on the other hand shamed me into tipping a window cleaner last week. Mind you this was a redo cleaning because the first guy sucked so bad and did not do any insides and broke two screens. Funny thing is he looked at me and said I would not tip me because of the job done before it was terrible. Too late he had my $20.

I start at 20%, but I usually ended up paying 15% or less average.

No refill-deduct
Hearing "NO" for an answer- deduct
Slow service-deduct

I only had 2 incidents which I paid 10cents + "talk" with manager.

Some waiter/waitress THINKS 20% tip is mandatory. I respectively disagree.

if it's convenient, or just smile.. either way they should be appreciative, otherwise he's just a dick didn't deserve either a tip or smile

i leave something when i leave, but you don't know if it's a different person each day.. so it's hard to do it 'properly'

I agree with you but 100% but at the same time all it takes is one bad apple to ruin your trip.
