I can't seem to understand this one. For the past several years, my car has been insured in two states simultaneously. The six-month premium has always been around $600, and I've had no tickets or accidents. At the beginning of this year, I removed one state from coverage. The updates have finally showed up in my online statements, and there was a huge disparity in the numbers. Now the six-month premium is $1,100. I called the company and they confirmed.

I have an in-depth knowledge of how the insurance industry works, and I don't understand this. The address is still the same and there are no new variables that come into the equation. The only difference is that one state is removed from the policy, which, if anything, would mean less risk and a decrease in the premium. Has this happened to anyone, or does anyone understand this?

Perhaps they previously assumed the car would spend the majority of the time in a lower risk state, and thus have a lower charge overall. What are the two states?

Nobody that I know can reveal how exactly car insurance rates are calculated except that various factors are taken into account. How those factors rate is a huge mystery. I’ll just recommend you get another car insurance quote and switch if it’s lower.

+1 if you were insured in something like Bumfuck, Alabama and Compton, California, and they thought you were going to be doing the most driving in Alabama, the rates are gonna go up for only being insured in California.

Worked in insurance for several years and your agent won't be able to clearly answer this question. I'd get a few quotes and see how they compare.

Not to pimp my old company but I'd take a look into State Farm. Their rates are a little higher than most, but their service really is top notch and when it comes time to make a claim you'll appreciate the excellent customer service and you'll be glad you spent a little more.
