Hmm. The VAG group is only mentioned 6 times in this top 10 list...

You are attacked the VAG group as a whole. Now you're restricting it to only the US? Interesting approach.

To be fair, diesels make up a much larger portion of vehicles on the road in Europe than in the US and are historically more reliable.

Car and Driver is pretty consistently rating Audis these days as better than their BMW counterparts. More fun to drive, dramatically better interiors. I think the fun to drive part is mostly because of runflats, but still...

The mew Mazda 3 is a complete redesign. Much better than the previous car, and rated by many as best in class for driving dynamics. Go drive one and see for yourself.

Steering way too light, horrible, well, I'm sure people get used to it

Audi's are crap, I won't (can't) be convinced otherwise. It's basically a dressed up Jetta, and most people would be better served buying a Lexus ES/Camry.

Yeah it certainly seems dubious. My parents bought a brand new '96 E320 for $40k back in 1996. Total cost of repairs over 11 years of ownership? $25K. More than half of the price of the car new. That's just unexpected repairs - that does not include regular maintenance.

However I've heard that the 95/96 Mercedes E is one of the most unreliable cars of all time so I doubt our experience is the norm.

Edit: actually it was a '95 E bought in 1995. '96 was a refresh year. We had the boxy headlights not the round ones.

Then again anecdotal evidence is not all that useful. For the most part I usually trust JD powers reports more than anecdotal evidence. All car brands have some non-zero proportion of lemons. That number is just lower for "more reliable" brands.

I'm sure Mercedes has changed drastically since '95 on the reliability front.
