Engine Oil Overfill Question
if a car is overfilled with engine oil no more than .5 quarts over the normal, will it cause a problem? can it wait until the next oil change or should action be taken on fixing it? is it a big deal?

if you're only 1/2 quart overfilled, you'll be alright. if you're more than 1 quart overfilled, then i'd drain some out.

Overfill doesn't hurt the engine afaik, but I think some moving part will hit the top level of oil in the pan, causing you to lose power and making it nice and frothy. (crankshaft maybe? don't know as much about engines as I should)

To the OP, I don't think that less than half a quart will cause problems. It it was really overfilled, you'd run into the foaming issue FirstClass mentions, which would cause improper lubrication of the engine's parts. |
