Negotiating apartment rent?

Im moving out of the house Ive been renting for the past few years while I was in school, and into an apartment/townhome.

I always hear about people getting "deals" on their new apartment/townhomes, so I am wondering if rent is generally something that can be negotiated, or if it is set in stone?

you can definitely negotiate, but it depends on the market in your area whether you get a discount or not.

+1 nothing is really set in stone. Its like buying a car. get an idea of what others are paying, and move from there.

Around here there is no negotiating for apartments. They will just shut the door on you or laugh if you proposed it.

For townhomes it may be a little easier/probable.

Depends on the area and demand I'd say. I offered $100 less per month than asking price and wound up signing for $50 less per month. Its not much, but it saves me $600 per year is the way I see it. 3 years of that and I could almost get Dinan Stage 2 flash

Do they have lots of spare apartments? Then ya you can. Is there only a few apartments available at any time? No chance.

I've heard of homes but never apartments ... certainly you can ask. Who knows you may save $20 bucks a month
