well there's no such thing as becoming a certified accountant with "the least schooling"... however you could go straight for a CPA exam if you're think you're a genius or something...
My suggestion to you is this: ACCA -> www.accaglobal.com It's a global association for professional accountants, and believe me, to companies it's worth more than a degree in financing. Try it out, it's not that expensive, plus you can do it all online. |

Your language conveys an attitude which makes me suspect you're going to find it difficult.
There's no shortcuts in life - get over it. Put in the time and it will be worth it, I'm a CA (Canadian equivalent of a CPA) and had to do 4.5 years of university, plus 30 months of work training, plus 3 professional exams AFTER I completed my university degree. Once you have it, its worth it, so put in the time. Being in the profession myself, I hope they continue to keep the standards high - I have no sympathy for someone who wants the respect that the profession conveys, but doesn't want to put the effort into getting it (ie. schooling). |

If I'm not mistaken, is there not a minimum number of classroom hours required to get the CPA? Anyone can sit for it, but I thought you needed classroom hours from an accredited institution to get the certification? Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Something to consider - it takes more than just getting a piece of paper to develop a well paying career. accountants that are paid really well are the ones that have very strong training and experience, developed specialized expertise, have strong communication and interpersonal skills, have great business acumen, and of course a winning attitude.
From what you're saying, it doesn't sound like you're willing to put in the time and effort needed to really succeed. I would rethink this if I were you. |

+1 to what everyone else has said. you need at least 150 credit hours, you need to pass the exam, and then you need to work for a period of time before you are certified.
I'm a CPA, and I work for a "Big 4" firm. Been doing it for 11 years. It's not easy. It's a lot of hours. If you're looking for the easy way in, you may want to reconsider.

I'll guess Spungos works for PwC.
For no particular reason at all. PwC would likely be my next choice if I were to switch firms - heard good things about them and so its likely I would find it most similar to my current firm. I work for Deloitte & Touche and am pretty happy. On a completely different note...will the US move to IFRS? I don't recall hearing anything, but a part of me wonders. Any guesses? |

I work for Deloitte. I focus on tax work, not audit.
