I will buy a HD-DVD since is cheaper, but the movies that I like are in blu-ray. and the movies that I like in HD-DVD are also in blu-ray.

I think if Sony comes with more affortable players they will win this war. the disk are more advanced that the hd-dvd offering the double amount of space. if a blu-ray player comes out for $290 or so I will buy it, but $450 for the cheapest player is ridiculous.

HD-DVD have players for $230.

Like someone else mentioned, those HD-DVD players that go for 230 are 1080i and there's going to be a 40GB PS3 going for $400 pretty soon.

Are you using HD cables like composite or HDMI?

If all those waiting went out and got Blu-Ray stuff right now, we'd be winning 3 to 1.

Say what? Composite? It has the worst PQ after coax. Do you mean component? And that's not necessarily better either...

My bad, componet. It's good. I switch between the 2 and the picture is quite impressive.

I use HDMI since it's much less cables anyway.

Sony has a history of failing.

That being said, I'm impartial and will wait until the format war is over.

The only differences in quality between HD-DVD <foo> and BD <foo> are decisions made in mastering.

If you're talking about VC-1 (aka Windows Media 9) then that codec is also part of both HD-DVD and BD specs (every HD-DVD and BD player is required to support VC-1). Personally I was hoping for a long time that WMV-9 would die a painful death in favor of good ol' MPEG4 H.264, but now that WMV-9 has been standardized into VC-1 there's a much lower risk of Microsoft winding up with a stranglehold on the industry.

In any event, I'm also guessing that the format differences will become a DVD+/-R thing when everyone just gets multi-format players, unless we skip over plastic disks entirely.
I wasn't talking about VC-1 (which is horrible by the way)

And it's obvious you can't put the same data on HD-dvd and Blu-ray
50gb > 30gb

i personally have both. but you can't make this argument very safe because there are too many variables involved. too many different tv sets, plasmas, lcds, Pioneers, Sony, Samsung, different movies. you have to get the best tv (which not everyone can afford), different cables, different setup, viewing distances, etc. and get the same movie in both formats and make a decision. i've done it, and it looks the pretty much the same, the only time i saw a difference i thought it was me being biased. if it is off, its going to be something ridiculous like a shade of gray here, or darker or lighter white, etc. I love the fact that HD-dvd has all of the extra features, web enabled extras, the PIP during the movie with extra details. Plus the fact that i have both HD DVD and regular DVD on the same disc is a major plus. Blu ray is just the movie and the extras in the menu, not really going out of their way. i think because they have noticed that they are winning and don't need to try so hard.

so, if you want to decide get a Blu ray, if you want a movie chances are that it will be on Blu ray, but only a few on HD. Kinda like for every 5 movies you want to buy, 3 or 4 will be BD, the last 1 or 2, are only going to be HD.

BS, pron industry is open to Blu-Ray too. I think Sony gave them blessing during summer if I'm not mistaken.
I dunno about current sales, but during (also) summer BR was outselling HDdvds 2:1, prolly due to more PS3 sales but still... anyway I hope BR wins because I bought PS3 hehe

Blu-Ray wins!!!

Sorry to bring back an old thread but apparently Blu-ray has won the contest already!

From Twice Magazine an industry magazine that tracks trends in the marketplace!

Blu-ray Players Top 2.7 Million

Washington — The Blu-ray Disc Association is having a Blu – not blue – Christmas, according to sales figures it released Monday.

The group reported Black Friday sales “were decidedly Blu” for both hardware and software, accounting for a total sell-in since launch of 2.7 million players in North American households as of Nov. 24.

Although the announcement did not break out sales by device type, the total count would include sales of Sony PlayStation 3 video game consoles that all include built-in Blu-ray Disc drives and dominate sales of all set-top Blu-ray players.

The HD DVD Promotion Group released sales figures last week showing total U.S. penetration of 750,000 HD DVD players to date, including sales of Xbox 360 video game consoles with add-on HD DVD drives.

The BDA cited Nielsen/VideoScan format share numbers showing HD disc software sales for the week of Black Friday were 72.6 percent compared to 27.4 percent for HD DVD.

Total sales of Blu-ray Disc movies in North America passed the 4 million mark in November, the BDA said, pointing out important milestones along the way including: reaching the 1 million mark in the first 10 months of release, reaching the 2 million mark three months after that and finally 4 million two months after that.

Comparatively, HD DVD reached 2.5 million disc sales in November, the BDA observed.

Other figures mentioned by the Blu-ray camp were the following:

Year-to-date (through Nov. 25), Blu-ray movie titles have outsold HD DVD in the United States by a 2-to-1 margin.
Of the top 20 high-definition titles in the United States this year, 18 are available on Blu-ray.
Blu-ray movies have 73 percent of the European market — outselling HD-DVD by a 3-to-1 margin, according to sales data provided by Media Control Gfk International.
Blu-ray’s share of the HD recorder market in Japan is now 95 percent as of the week ending Nov. 12, according to Media Control Gfk International.
