The render looks half nice and half like something a high-schooler would like. Remove the tacky sideskirt and front bumper aero and this would be great. However, overall it's FAR too interesting for BMW, so you can be assured that whatever they release is extremely boring compared to this. We wouldn't want to actually create a passionate car that caters to a niche market now would we?

Whatever the new Z range will be, make a goddamn M version this time please. Not a Z3 m35i, but a real M Roadster. Manual and a LSD, thanks!

More interesting is the FT-1 that toyota has shown. If this partnership is anything like the toyota/subaru one, this new Z5(?) should look like the FT-1 with kidneys.
It's so interesting how two people can look at the same thing and have completely opposite opinions of it. IMO the Toyota FT-1 is

Yeah I question the hybrid tech also unless Toyota is working on something that we don't know about. Id say some of the Toyota supply chain would be helpful as well.

Lets face it (and be honest), every new BMW models for the last 2 years has been NO GOOD.
Starting with the 3 series (already looks outdated), 2-series (you KNOW it is ugly, I'm sure it drives well), 4 series / M4 (it's just not as good as the E92) and the X5 (come on, more like a facelift). Now the X4 (Macan really is the winner here, even though BMW has created this segment) and this 2 series Tourer (enough is enough). Very sad.

I'm sorry BMW but it's time to ask your people "What da hell is going on in the deisgn department?"
I say bring back Mr. Bangle or fire all design department people including Mr. Karim

Agreed. It would be a shame that if BMW finally makes a car to compete with the 911 that it couldn't do it by itself and would have to partner with Toyota. The only thing I'm looking forward to coming out of this is reliability. That would be great. Otherwise, BMW has the means to do it's own thing. As shown with the i8 and i3. So... What's the deal?

The answer is hiding somewhere here.

From him:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmut_Panke

They moved to him:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norbert_Reithofer

The first one was a nuclear scientist, open minded and with experience from the world largets organisations and huge companies. He refused to see BMW entering low price market.

His succesor
" reach full production of the new generation E90 3 Series, from six months to three.[4] On 1 September 2006 he succeeded Helmut Panke "

is just a BMWs child (works at BMW from 21yo) that cares only for profitability and doenst have any experience outside the brand. He probably believes that whatever BMW says and do is law of god.

It looks like the new CEO sees BMW nearer to Toyota than to Porsche ! But it was the opposite that made BMW brand so strong ....

Very interesting.. I can see that being the cause of change in BMW's corporate culture. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that Toyota and BMW are collaborating. Toyota needs BMW's performance know-how and BMW need's Toyota's best in class hybrid technology. It's a win-win in my book. I just wouldn't expect this BMW to be more reliable since a lot of the parts are going to be sourced from the current supplier network with current BMW standards.

I actually agree with you on the Toyota. It isn't the prettiest either, however I say interesting only because of how similar the FT-86 is to the BRZ. If BMW/Toyota are doing what Subaru/Toyota did, then the FT-1 is a more accurate render[ing] than the one pictured above.

Yea. Re-creating one of the most sought after best performing cars of its time would just be terrible. Who in their right mind would ever want to buy one?

I have a Toyota 4Runner - they are poor quality vehicles and I cannot wait to get rid of it! Though the 4Runner is the best SUV under $50k it is still a poor quality in regards to materials.

I hope that what ever they build together its under the Toyota brand or maybe the i3 brand, maybe a i5 is coming as those vehicle are already cheap looking like the Prius.

Sure like that orange mock up a whole lot better than the red Supra concept.

I thought I heard the BMW/Toyota collaboration was mainly going to focus on some type of carbon fiber mono-body for the drivers compartment along with chassis/frame development.

Personally, take the orange concept and throw a v8 twin turbo... Or V10 and you've got a Killer GT car that would rival Anything Jag, Aston, Alpha or Maserati is putting out.

The Toyota FT-1 is not hybrid.

Toyota doesn't need BMW's know-how. They did the LFA alone, and it exceeds any BMW ever built. Toyota needs BMW to make their sports car affordable (unlike the limited production LFA) and BMW needs Toyota for economies of scale, otherwise the BMW bean counter will not allow the BMW engineers to build a sports car.

Its a very profitable segment and the BMW's board focuses at selling products on masses.

BMW please give to your people a light vehicle and put on S65 engine.

2 seater please ! weight 1350 kg ! PLEASE !
BMW has no SL competitor, no Mercedes SLS/GT and Audi R8 competitor, and they damn sure will probably never have a small Ferrari competitor. And especially since the 458 is on it's way out (When they do the Speciale model, it's the final horray for the vehicle) and supposedly Porsche is developing a 960, which means anything that BMW comes up with has to be in the 600 hp range....
No, BMW puts it's stock in developing minivans like the 2 Series Active Tourer.

I really like the Toyota FT-1...We all wonder what BMw is holding.

So I guess we can officially kill off the crap about BMW remaining "independent" now?
