I get it;

I started fooling around with a 2x tc coupled to my 105mm macro; its getting reeeally close; but even at low apertures, the DOF is so thin that I will be forced to do some focus stacking to get decent results.

Yeah, beyond 1-1 and even at 1-1 depending on what you want to do, photo stacking is the way to go. One of my pals on flickr even mounted a microscope to his camera body!
