Has anyone stopped tipping?

Now that I am prompted for a tip everywhere I go - I pretty much just stopped tipping and have reduced my tips at restaurants to 15%.

I don't tip for anything else, ever, anymore. I used to tip the Starbucks barista a few dollars but now that they are extorting us, that stopped completely.

Anyone else? Seems like these fast food workers are making six figures now

Yeah I just roll with 15-18%. If their min is 20%+ then I hit custom loll.

It's shameless. Service industry workers have gotten bigger % raises lately than any of us. F outta here

I have gone back to pre-pandemic standard tipping... 15% at a restaurant for a sit down meal and no tip for take out orders. It got way out of hand....

Mr. Pink stopped tipping too.

!5-20% at a sit down restaurant for me, that's about it. If someone goes above and beyond the call of duty elsewhere, then yeah, I tip them.

Besides tipping being a straight up cash grab, I have a host of other issues with it. America has turned into the Land of the Fee. I primarily tip at restaurants and valet if I need them to park my shit up front. Other than that, no tipping for me. Anywhere you go now that has a tablet as a POS, you can believe that thing will swivel around asking for you to tip on the croissant you just bought.

I did a Pizza Hut on line order for pick up and it showed me a min requested tip of 18%.
Like a lot of you I worked a job that earned tips in my younger years and good service always warranted a tip as the hourly wage was low. That is not the case these days with folks thinking that you should be able to support a family of 4 working in a fast food joint, with min wages or prevailing wages in the $15:00 hr range. Now you automate the ordering, cooking and serving to eliminate those jobs and you want me to tip you for that? Fat Chance (seems appropriate for a fast food discussion). When I walk into a sit down restaurant and have a server, you bet I tip and well for good service.

That's something admirable about Japanese society. I remember visiting there and mistakenly tipping after a meal. The guy RAN out of the resto to hand us back the cash, they simply will NOT accept any tip, it's against their philosophy as they believe that are just doing their job, vs here and elsewhere, it's getting a bit crazy, e.g. tipping for takeout....what??

A mechanic I went to asked for a tip, that was a new one lol. However, to be fair, the guy was crazy honest and did some minor work for me for free as he anticipated me coming in for further service, so ofc I 'tip' him, i.e. paid him fairly for his work, but still haha.

I will add:

A favorite pizza place that I go to wants me to tip now via their tablet when I go to PICK UP my pizza. I won't tip for that. They didn't do anything to deserve that tip. I ordered the pizza and I picked it up and paid for it. That's it.

I’m trying to not tip for takeout and such. Today I did tip $1.50 for some ice cream at Salt & Straw. They start with 15%+. I just did custom and kicked in about 10%. I really shouldn’t have. I ain’t cheap. I just don’t like how it’s gotten way out of hand. I mean, tipping for them to do the job they’re paid to do? Went to dinner tonight with a lady friend, and on the bill there’s a healthcare fee for the workers. Wtf is that? Why are WE helping pay for that? Just ridiculous.

If I go to a place that has a tip jar and I pay with cash and get change back I'll drop a dollar or two in. Hopefully the workers will get it.

I got beaked on by a worker at one of the convenience stores at the airport for not tipping her.

I had ZERO interaction with her-- I didn't even notice her until she came up and started giving me smack for not tipping.

I walked in, picked up a soda, scanned it, and paid for it all on my own-- and she was obviously watching, because she came up to me and said "Aren't you going to tip?" right when I got to the screen and was looking for the "No Tip" option.

All she was doing was standing in the store and literally provided me with NO service, much less any interaction. And she wanted a tip?

Um, no.

I admit, I was a little boggled by her entitlement and attitude.

Then maybe they should get an education and better themselves. No one paid for my education, but me. There was no such thing as a tip jar when I was working. Maybe we should have put a tip jar at the exit gate for the passengers to tip us ATC's. I guarantee we went above and beyond.

That. Is. Insane...and it's enabling ppl like that poster calling other ppl 'cheap'....really? If they wanna be suckers, go ahead, I'm quite the opposite of cheap and pay good $ for good service, not this made-up nonsense. It's about principles.

From the interweb:

"The tip jar may have originated hundreds of years ago. A 1946 editorial in Life claimed that English taverns used prominently displayed urns for tips that were labelled 'To Insure Promptitude'."

Some drop a dollar in, some don't. Your choice. Should be no pressure to do so, though.

This is the key part, ridiculous some ppl give pressure like that airport incident above. Might as well make it mandatory 'tipping' then smh.

I have and always will tip based on performance. The bottom line is you take care of me, and I will take care of you.

One thing I think servers have forgotten is how to make things right or comp you when things go wrong in order to earn tips. I’ve had many meals come out late, cold, wrong side or they somehow forgot to bring an appetizer etc. None seem willing to go back to the kitchen to make sure the meal is right or willing to discount your meal to make things right. I’m just tipping for you to be a mindless machine which is why many of these jobs will be replaced by them.

I’ve even noticed I have to ask for drink refills more often or the server just vanishes. They also seem to have a process they can’t deviate from because it must be overwhelming. When you seat me and make me wait 5-10 minutes, just long enough for me to consider walking out, and finally show up and just want to take my drink order when I’m ready to order my meal but you get perplexed because it’s too much information or something it just makes everything much slower and frustrating. Turning tables more quickly gives you more opportunities to make tips. I realize some people will eat then sit forever, but if you give quick service, most people will leave once they are done.

The drive through car washes here have a young man who stands there to make sure you know how to slide your credit card - they get pretty fussy if you don’t tip - they are also there to try to sell you a membership or press the correct menu items - to me they are the most egregious.

Uber eats I just tip $5 for all my orders.

This thread is timely as I just listened to The Stuff They Don't Want You To Know episode on tipping. I'm not into conspiracy theories but this is a decent listen if you are into podcasts. Throughline also ran an episode on tipping a couple years back. Like everything else, eat the meat and throw away the bones.

PSA: This is an apolitical topic, so I don't want to hear shit about politics. Thank you.
