335d: Rear "dances" over bumps

Hi all -

So, to make a very, very long story short, my family has a 2011 335d which was repaired at a stealership following a minor accident. They replaced two bent wheels, the rear subframe (...), one front control arm, and one rear control arm. After their third "precision alignment" and $4,000 later, they claimed the car was good to go.

After living with it for a year and continuously facepalming for not fixing it ourselves, we've started noticing a shimmy from the rear when the car goes over bumps. My guess is that it's a toe problem, since it feels like the rear steers itself differently depending on which side the weight is transferring to.

Any advice on what to do? I'm planning to replace the other rear control arm and get an alignment done at an actual shop, think that'd fix it?

Really appreciate the help...

Take it to a good alignment shop first and have it checked before you replace anything. I like Les Schwab

I think you'll find that it's due to squishy rear subframe bushings rather than to a defect. My 328 has had the "1/2 lane hop" since new, over bumps that never unsettled my old Benz.

My wife's new E350 actually handles mid-corner bumps better than my 3.

+1 on the alignment. Took mine into the dealer for the same thing while it was in warranty, they tried giving it back to me saying it was fine, So I made the deal with the service manager to put it on the alignment rack, and if it was good, I'd pay for it, if bad, they'd do the work under warranty. The rears (particularly the right rear) were way out of whack. Has driven fine ever since.
I'm concerned about the work done to your car though. I'd take it to another dealer don't tell them about the damage and repair and if it comes back that something is so far out they can't adjust it, then you have the paperwork proving the repairs were inadequate and can go back to the original dealer for recourse.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'll take it to another dealer to have it looked at since it's still under warranty. If they find anything, I have the paperwork and lots of horror stories about the original repair that I'll bring to BMW North America's attention since the original dealer won't do anything for us. Cheers!

Runflats? Tire pressure? My 335d hopped if the tire pressure was too high, just something simple to check first.
