DIY - NBT Retrofit - E92
DIY - NBT retrofit - E92
Posting this DIY to help peeps who may considering doing this upgrade First up, I cant take credit for these following install. All credit goes to Melbourne based E90 forum member Vtl (Vince aka BMW Yoda) Top guy who not only does awesome work but also gives up most of his weekends to help peeps with their installs... Vtl did all the work on this retrofit, I simply took the pictures and documented this DIV Backstory My car is a 2008 E92 with a the original CCC unit One of guys on the forum (Cashy) pulled together a group buy and a pile of information on the NBT retrofit process and the parts needed The total cost of the upgrade including install was around $3000 TBH its an expensive upgrade and really only worth doing if you want to modernise your CCC system. If you have CIC already, then this upgrade is probably not necessary What parts you need will depend on your cars year and model Do your research and check the part numbers before you buy (realoem.com is a helpful reference) These are the parts needed for my 2008 E92 1. NBT retrofit kit Include NBT head unit, LED screen and retrofit wiring harness (pre-coded to cars VIN) 2. CIC front panel Covers NBT DVD slot. Includes volume knob and radio buttons 3. CIC console trim Front console trim with hole cut for CIC controller. Check the shape of the hole in the photo below 4. CIC controller CIC Multi function button Idrive controller 5. CIC controller bracket Plastic bracket that holds the controller in place and allows it to be fastened to the console trim 6. CIC controller trim Silver trim that fits neatly around controller to hid gap (optional) 7. Aux/USB cable Cable and socket that runs from the center console to the NBT head unit 8. Blue tooth antenna In dash blue tooth antenna. Your old blue tooth module wont work after NBT install, so you need this 9. Reversing camera Replacement trunk handle with camera (optional) There are other items that you may require, depending on your car and the NBT options you chose (eg ceramic touch controller) These are simply the items needed for my upgrade Last edited by Socket; 08-07-2016 at 08:40 AM.. |

With the CCC system out of the vehicle the next stage is to replace the CCC backlit screen with the NBT LCD screen.
Think of it like pulling apart a TV, replacing the LED screen and putting the TV back together again In this next section, we walk through the steps for disassembling the CCC screen and the NBT screens, then how you use parts from both the CCC and NBT units, to build a new display screen, that will fit back perfectly into the dashboard CCC Screen Disassembly Now to disassemble the CCC screen We basically want to keep the shell so the new screen will fit back into the dashboard like the original screen To hold the new LED screen in place we also need to keep the internal structural plates Last edited by Socket; 08-07-2016 at 09:37 AM.. |

NBT Screen Disassembly
Now to disassemble the NBT screen We basically want to keep the new LCD screen and electronics, so we can put it inside the old CCC shell Last edited by Socket; 08-07-2016 at 09:47 AM.. |

Install
Final step, wiring everything up and fitting it into the dash It was pretty late in the day, so I did not get lots of pics of this stage Is basically a reverse of the removal stage and if you following the wiring instructions provided by your supplier, it should be pretty simple One word of caution, the colour of the the plugs do not always match, so don't be concerned if the plug is green and the socket is blue Also remember to reconnect and test everything before installing everything in the dash It is much easier to switch plugs around before you install everything and have to pull it out again Last edited by Socket; 08-08-2016 at 04:26 AM.. |
