This is good news. I have started to notice a little bit of what i believe to be the "lifter ticking" and was going to do an oil change with an engine/valve cleanout

Hey,

Can someone please explain to me what LL01 and LL04 is?

I'm going Monday to get my oil done at a BMW shop in town. It's my first Beemer and don't know if they're recommending the right stuff.

He said my 06 E90 is a LL-04 and he's going to put total synthetic long life 5w30 that meets the approval or Fuchs 5w40 also same specs

You guys think this is a good move?

Thanks

The '01 and '04 stand for years 2001 and 2004. They're the years that BMW specified their latest standards.

LL-01 is the oil to use in all BMW gasoline/petrol engines in the USA/CA. LL-04 is the oil to use in all DIESEL engined BMWs in the USA/CA. It is a low-ash formula (don't ask). (It is also used in other countries - EU countries mostly - that have ultra-low-sulfur content in their gasoline. The USA/CA don't have that, and it isn't recommended to use LL-04 in gas/petrol engines here.)

Fuchs is a EU manufacturer of oils; good oil (often thought to be the factory fill for BMW, Porsche and other EU manufacturers.)

If they mechanics think that your E90 should be filled with LL-04, you should find other mechanics. It won't hurt your engine, but it won't last for the extended drain intervals that the car is designed for (15K miles/25K km.)

Awesome. thanks for the reply.

The mechanic said he's got LL-01 and LL-04. I'll make sure they fill it up with LL-01 for now.

I finally took the plunge and put some GC in my e90. The rough idle and slight ticking on cold start seems improved. I was using m1 before and also sometimes BMW dealer oil. Color me impressed.

So I've read through this whole thread.

Why does everyone on here look for different oils besides the one that BMW sells at the dealer?

Are these other oils better for the car or are people just trying to save $5? The manual states that 5w-30 is recommended, so why bother trying all these various weights?

Me too. Switched from M1 to GC, and happy about the change (except for the cost - now that Walmart has 5 qt jugs for $25.) Quieter and smoother on cold start, and a bit nosier at high rpm in a good way. Uses a bit more oil between oil changes, but only 1/2 qt vs. 1/4 qt with M1, but I don't view that as bad.

What's everyone's opinion on GC vs. BMW oil? I can actually get BMW oil cheaper than GC from Pep Boys. (although the GC is cheaper than M1)

I know some people have mentioned Schaefers 7000 5w30 on here but I could never find anyone who sent a sample to black stone for analysis. Reading the bob is the oil guy forums it meets all the requirements for LL-01, it has just never been sent off to BMW to get the rubber stamp of LL-01.

Back when I had a 350z we had several hundred people send in samples and test different oils and the best performers, like here, the german castrol 5w30, the mobile 1 0w40 were in the top 3... so was the Schaefers, but I could get it for much cheaper than the rest (5 bucks a quart) so I used it. Now I have the 335 and decided to keep using it and give it a try.... well here is the UOA...

Bringing back this age old thread back from the dead, I'd like to know what the popular consensus is for weight. When I boosted my '06 RSX, I ran either Shell Rotella T6 5w-40, or M1 5w-40. Ran over 40k miles on a 62mm turbo with no problems. Turbo has no shaft play, blade damage, & the motor runs smooth as butter. I'm no expert on oil, but as far as I know, motors & their associated parts are all pretty much built from the same elements for all manufacturers. So I'm failing to see the importance of upholding the LL-01 status quo for the E9x. As long as the weight stays within reason of the factory recommendation, I don't see why most full synthetics won't keep your motor healthy

A few guys with diesel engines are running it (it's a low-saps oil so is suitable for the DPF and catalysts). Just remember it's not an extended drain oil like LL-01 is in the gas engines and you'll have to change before 10K miles.

Personally, I don't see why people believe that an oil designed for heavy trucks with 10 Liter engines running no more than 2500 rpm is suitable for a 7K redline light gasoline engine, but whatever.

I ran it in my boosted 8k red line Acura, & it worked fine. No issues at all.

Sorry for beating this point beyond death:

Which Castrol EDGE (formerly SYNTEC) European Blend Formula fully synthetic oil would you pick for the winter in the north east on E90 335i: 0W-30 or 0W-40? Assume cost is the same between the two.

For what it's worth, I have long highway drives but otherwise car sits normal amount of time, overnight etc.

the 0 helps with cold starts....that's what you need in the cold.
I would get either.....in our cars very minor differences.

the only test I would worry about fuel economy increase.

thanks DN! it's my first oil change without dealer under warranty. i'm leaning towards Castrol 0w-40 since it's made in Germany and I thought it might be the slightest better for spirited highway driving over long distances. but like you said, i would probably never notice a difference. i do like that 0w-30 has been around for years though...

Guys...its not that hard
Use castrol 0w30(preferred) or castrol 0w40. 0w is perfect when oil is warming up. 30weight is good for normal oil temp. (and in cold weather). When oil temps are on the higher side 40 weight is ok.
