Carbon Fiber Wrap Build Thread ! Everyone Wants To Know How To Do It

CARBON FIBER BUILD THREAD !

Everyone wanted to know how to do it so I am going to start a build thread and go step by step. I am going to add more and more pics with steps as this goes along. I also have thought about making a dvd as well if anyone would be interested.

Let me know if you have any questions and I apologize about the crappy cell phone pics.

STEP 1-

Always scuff plastic, metal, abs, or any other material you are going to lay carbon on. I use 40 grit because the better the adhesion the better it will last. You will also remove any contaminants that are on the piece. After this you will want to spray the piece black with any spray primer so under the carbon is black and not visible. If you are doing silver carbon use silver paint.

STEP 2
Let everything dry and wrap up with tape all parts or holes you dont want resin to go into.

STEP 3

You will use an adhesive to spray on the piece for adhesion. I use a company called INfuzene. Its expensive but works well. Then apply the carbon on top and this is where it takes time and patience plus experience. Trust me this is the most important part of the whole process.

I'm sorry, but what made you use this fabric over vinyl? Vinyl seems to provide all the benefits without the negatives like having to rough up the trim and spray adhesive. With vinyl you can remove it and the trim looks as it did before underneath.

Ya basically they prefer the look and texture of real carbon fiber, so its worth the more complicated application to them. Personal preference

Have you put the vinyl and real CF side by side? It's not remotely close. Vinyl doesn't provide all the benefits - gloss, depth, weave, etc. The resin gives real CF a depth that vinyl won't ever get and the 3D weave on the real cloth is very different than the simulated 3D weave on vinyl.

The only advantages vinyl have are that it's much, much easier to put on, it can be removed, and it's cheaper than real CF. But if real CF is an option, vinyl is a distant 2nd.

I did not realize that. I'd like to see a side by side though.
