The meaning of Uncle Tom

I read Uncle Tom's Cabin in 11th grade, and I don't get why Uncle Tom is always used in a negative connotation. I bet most of the people who use that phrase haven't even read that book. Shame on them.

Yes, this is a serious thread.

shim, I read this book too in high school. Briefly, I seem to remember it was a neg. connotation because if you were an "uncle tom" you were a black dude kissing up to the enemy (whitey). This was during civil war era though.

shim man you have some really random threads bro

Wow, great, I wrote an essay on this not to long ago (I'm in 11th grade btw)...

..soo if you really wann know....

The character Uncle Tom from "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is used as a negative connotation as it refers to a black person giving in to the white man. The character Uncle Tom was very passive throughout the story, he wouldn't fight or lash back, he would just agree into everything his slave owners/masters had told him to. When he was faced with the fact that he was being sold in the beginning, he refused to run away, he was then sold to a stricter master, and so and so on. Until eventually he was killed by one of the strictest masters.

Theres more, I don't remember exactly, the essay I wrote was arguing against this point. I recieved a B on it too. If you're really interested I'll send it to you :]

Yeah, that's what people who use that term say, but I'm saying that they haven't read the damn book!

I don't need an essay, I don't want anything to do with high school anymore.
