Look at MotoGP. When they come to Indy it sells out - something F1 never achieved. When they go to Laguna Seca it sells out. MotoGP is the F1 of motorcycle racing. What's the difference? MotoGP's image isn't crafted as some kind of ultra pretentious snob fest.
Plenty of snobs in the USA and the World, although I disagree with your negativity.

MotoGP kicks ass because you can have 6 lead changes in half a lap, Kentucky Kid, sport bike demographics, faster, need more balls, etc.

That's the record for a single GP day.

[QUOTE=Red Bread;7380645]You've maybe heard of LA? Still seems to make more sense than any others, as well as Vegas."

From what I understand, one of the big problems with F1 in the US is that there are no good F1 capable tracks around. I KNOW from experience that it is extremely difficult to get permits for NEW tracks, particularly in CA,or NY. Austin is going to build a new track from the ground up, and address all the F1 needs. You cant do that in most places these days.

Did anyone watch the pre-race show for the Turkish Grand Prix?

They interviewed Bernie, and asked him about his thoughts for the U.S. Grand Prix. All they could muster out of him was a "We chose them because they're doing what we wanted." and a "Will see." Not a lot of positivity for something that is pretty big news!

Bernie doesn't like Will Buxton
Unfortunately, Bernie is a very picky guy when it comes to people -- he would speak to Peter Windsor very differently

as well as Eddie Jordan in BBC...when they talked about the FOTA break-away last season...it got tense and awkard...but Bernie and Eddie still able to joke and finish the interview....its just down to how long you've been around the paddock and how important around the paddock....

What does the attendance at one race 10 years ago have to do with anything? F1 has changed a hell of a lot since then. The fact is that attendance was waning, it was a money loser for Indy, yet Bernie was asking for more, and the circuit design was pretty meh. The redesign for MotoGP has helped improve on that, though. If the world's economy were still in 2006-2007 shape then there would be plenty of viable options, but it's not and there aren't. As far as I can see Austin is another one of Bernie's negotiating tactics, just like Donnington was.

Another thing to keep in mind is the cost necessary to pull this off.

David Hobbs reminded viewers during the Monaco F1 Debrief show that the Shanghai circuit cost more than 250 million. That's in China, where labor is like pennies on the dollar compared to the US.

Where in this broke-ass economy are they gonna get that money?

The NFL wants a new stadium for Los Angeles as a requirement for moving a team there.

Even with all the revenue that an LA NFL franchise has to offer, no one has been able to come up with the cash and mojo to make that happen in more than 15 years!

You think building all the facilities for a modern F1 race in Texas to the tune of 500 million dollars has a realistic chance of happening in two years?

Not even Jerry Jones could pull that off.

Reality has not sunk in yet. You are stuck in liberal taxation land. I can remember when it all started a long time ago with Enron. Since then, California has gone down hill and will never be what it once was. Money is being diverted to support liberal views. Not even Arnold can save her. At least, Thanks to Nancy, now we can quit our jobs and pursue our life long dream of becoming a race car driver, that is, IN TEXAS. As Bruce would say, Yippy Ki-Ay, Mother Fucker.

I don't care if California isn't in the running.

No one here is foolish enough to even try.

They don't have the money. The only reason they made the announcement was to attract sponsors and investors.

The economy ain't getting better and no one is seriously interested in dumping $350M into a track in Texas that isn't for NASCAR.

Some recent article just announced there was $200M invested in it already. Doesn't seem so far off the mark so early.

Heads up:

There is supposed to be a news conference at 10am CST today in which they will announce the exact location and some more details: http://www.kxan.com/dpp/news/local/a...-revealed-tues

This is supposedly what the track will look like but it isn't yet confirmed. I'm trying to get my hands on a higher quality map atm:

^ Edit: That's probably a bogus map, no track layout released yet.

All they did was announce the official location and primary sponsor (Red McCombs)

American's new Formula One race track will cost an estimated $200 million to build while creating 1,200 temporary jobs.

According to Austin American-Statesman, confidential papers relating to the track, which were released to the newspaper after a request to open records, details several of the figures relating to the new F1 venue.

The track, which should have the capacity to 400,000-plus fans, will be 'built for an estimated $200 million' with the construction employing 1,500-plus workers.

Added to that, a further '1,200 temporary workers would be hired over Formula One race weekends. About 40 employees would work year-round at the track.'

As for money brought in to the economy, Full Throttle Productions, the company that is bringing F1 back to America, reckons the race weekend should generate $300 million for the local economy.

Austin is expected to host its inaugural grand prix in 2012.
