Marijuana Ransom!

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,581999,00.html
Quote:

MARATHON, Fla. — Investigators in the Florida Keys say they lured a suspected marijuana grower into turning himself in by leaving a ransom note in place of six seized pot plants.

The sheriff's office in Monroe County says detectives discovered the plants in a wooded lot and confiscated them.

They left a phone number on a note that read: "Thanks for the grow! You want them back? Call for the price."

Steven Alan Locasio called the number about 10 minutes later. Locasio offered $200 for the plants, and detectives agreed to meet him for an exchange.

Locasio was arrested and booked into jail on drug charges. He was expected to appear in court Tuesday. It's unclear if he already has an attorney.

A telephone message left for Locasio was not immediately returned.

Umm isn't that illegal for them to do though? It's called entrapment.

Maybe only certain states have entrapment. I think it depends though since there's always cops putting fake cars out on the street for people to steal and then arrest them.

It's legal, it's called stings. They have one for drugs where they implant an undercover officer who pretends to deal drugs and then catch unsuspecting people along with fraud, prostitution, etc

It's not entrapment at all. Entrapment occurs when the gov't entices you to do something illegal that you wouldn't have done but for the enticement.

Here, the cops confiscated the weed and enticed the pothead to make a phone call. This is not entrapment because making the phone call (and subsequent meeting) was not illegal and is not an element of the crime he will be charged with. Sure, it helped the cops catch him, but he's facing a criminal charge because he voluntarily grew the pot, not because of the phone call.

I'm all for this kind of creative police work. On the other hand, I also watched a show where cops parked an Audi in bad neighborhoods with the keys in it (rigged up with cameras, remote kill switch, etc.) and was a little less enthused about the appropriateness of that type of police work.

they are the same type of situation, both sting operations

people are tricked into confessing and proving their crimes.

the guy with the weed shouldnt have been growing out in the open, but it isnt like the police left a note that said "to get your plants back, call the xxPD"

I am all for that last sting as well. If I saw a car with keys I wouldn't steal it, and if you would you probably deserve to be in jail.

I might hide the keys and leave a phone number or just lock the keys in the car for that person's sake, but I sure as hell wouldn't steal the car.

I wouldn't steal the car either, don't feel bad for car thieves and agree that the car sting is not entrapment, but it gets a little closer to the line than I am comfortable with. I also think there are more constructive things for a dozen cops to be doing on a Saturday night for a poor, high-crime community than planting luxury sedans in it with the doors unlocked, interior lights on and keys in the ignition.

I feel more sorry for the grower than the car thief example. I also agree with the above post in how cops should be doing something a bit more productive/constructive than leave a luxury car in a bad neighborhood. Instead of "inticing" potential criminals into stealing a luxury car, how bout they work on the other crimes are happening without police help.

I feel bad for the guy because he is a target of these over enthused cops who probably have some personal hate towards herb... but the guy is a dumb shit for calling the number, any one should know better. And with that justification, its safe to say it wouldnt be too much more time before this guy slipped up on his own. Better now being caught with less than six plants versus getting snagged with a few duffle bags of herb.

good luck to him.... hes gonna need it. Fuck the police though, that shit is so pathetic. They should be worrying about more important things, not this fuckery.

I wish they did more of those car things
but instead of arresting them, they run them over and over again with the car they tried to steal...
I hate criminals and I love to see them punished at the full extent of the law.
