Generally speaking, this does appear to be the case. Merc technology, finishing, etc... are arguably much better. GM has been in the gutter for way too many years to invest properly in R&D etc...

This is what Motor Trend has to say about it, and I quote: "You'll converse, that is, until you step hard on the throttle -- at which point your vocabulary will lapse into mere grunts and screams. So much torque floods the 325/30R20 rear Dunlops, the Black Series nearly stands on end. Launched in ESP Sport, which allows a useful whiff of wheelspin, the Black Series blitzes to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and guns through the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds at 123.9 mph. Look elsewhere on this site, though, and you'll note that, brutally fast as it is, the SL65 Black is easily outpaced by, say, the Corvette ZR1 (3.2 sec to 60 mph, quarter in 11.2 sec at 130.5 mph). It's largely a weight issue: Even though its copious carbon fiber helps shed 210 pounds over a standard SL65, the Black Series still checks in at 4221 pounds (versus the ZR1's 3364). Think of it, then, as one of the world's quickest tanks."

ZR1 > SL65 Black Series > SL65...

The Vette out performs them both.

they did have articles on the ZR1 in the last two issues of MT. This month's issue (just received a day ago) had a review on the SL65 AMG BS. It says inthe article that the ZR1 beats it out a bit on the 1/4. If I were a millionaire, I would take the MB anyday, however I may be actually able to afford a ZR1 someday...so that price of performance wins in my book. It was interesting in the article on the MB though that it said the engine makes som much torque it had to be electronically limited to 738 ft lbs. Without the limit torque was near 885 ft lbs. I'm sure a minor software change can turn this car into an uncontrollable tire melting machine that will easily handle a ZR1, if you have the CASH!

I beg to differ, guys are even getting 10's out of a stock C6 ZO6... not even a ZR-1. Software or not the black series weighs almost 1,000 pounds MORE than the ZR1 and even if it puts down more power on paper that doesn't mean you will be able to put that power to the ground in the straights or even at a track like the ring...

2009 ZR-1:

Curb Weight: 3364lbs

HP: 620

TQ: 595

2010 SL65 Black:

Curb Weight: 4221lbs

HP: 661

TQ: 738

The ZR-1 can handle what it puts down and out, the ZR-1 can handle it. One thing GM has done right is produce motors and drive trains that can handle gobs and gobs of horsepower and torque, not only handle it but put it down.

The SL65 may have the advantage in terms of comforts and bling but I think it is a 350lb power lifter, it may be able to bench press 600lbs but in terms of performance efficiency it does not stack up to the ZR-1 nor can it handle the power reliably like the ZR-1... not even close.

If you speak of the SL65 Black with tuning to expose the power MB says it has but was "de-tuned" of then you can see the Lingenfelter Corvette ZO6 that puts down a reliable 1,000 hp.

Vette > Benz

I'd have a seriously hard time choosing between the two. It would come down to a test drive. A long, looong test drive.

In my opinion...and just going off of what I've read...
Looks: SL65 BS > ZR1
Performance: SL65 BS < ZR1
Value: SL65 BS <<< ZR1
Fun factor: SL65 BS ? ZR1

It all comes down to which one is more fun to drive, which I would honestly place all bets on it being the ZR1. Lighter cars are almost always more fun to drive than tanks, despite a performance deficit (if there was one, which in this case there isn't). The SL65 has the presence, the badge, and the power, but the ZR1 has the fun, and I like how it's the underdog.

That guy has serious skills. That was a flawless run considering the amount of power and it being a RWD manual car.
