Winter vacation ideas?

I'm trying to plan a vacation for early Jan. and have no clue where to go. It'd be for 8-9 nights, but the problem is, it has to be something wintery/cold. Gf and I aren't skiiers or anything, but we'd probably try it for a day or two. In thinking about the typical places like VT, I figured it'd get boring quickly after a couple nights b/c there's not much else to do besides ski/snowmobile. Thought about going to Whistler for a couple days then checking out Vancouver, but my friend just told me winters in Vancouver are pretty crappy w/all the rain & sightseeing stuff will be miserable.

Any ideas? It seems like it'd be wayyyy easier to just hop on a cruise, but she wants a wintery vacation (even though we live in the northeast )

Are you open to leaving the country (sorry, but Canada doesn't count as international travel)? What about Oslo or something?

Lake Tahoe

Skiing, Fine dining, Night life, Hiking trails, Gorgeous scenery/ nature, etc.

and within short distance of driving to

Nevada (side of the lake) : Casino (Gambling, shows and other vices. take your pick)

San Francisco : Need I say more?

It fits the bill for 8-9 days excursion into cold weather territory without getting bored out of your mind if you are not a hardcore skier/ snow boarder.

Have fun wherever you end up going ...

I'm like 35 mins from NYC and my gf hates it, so that wouldn't work. Would love to get out of N. America, but I can't really do international b/c the airfare is a little much. Trying to keep things at around $2000, w/o domestic airfare. Not sure if that's possible, but am striving for that. Lake Tahoe sounds like a good idea w/the casinos + she loves SF. Aspen's one I hadn't thought about either...thanks for the suggestions guys -- keep 'em coming. I'll post up what we decide on

Montreal, Quebec City?
I would say Big Sky area out in Montana... but you said you're not skiers/boarders.

Boston hotel 2-3 days, New Hampshire or Vermont bed & breakfast (near a ski slope) for the rest.

$2K not enough. Driving will cut down on expenses.

Vermont Inn suggestion: http://www.relaischateaux.com/en/des...2/vermont/837/
4 nights $2500

Vermont is the quintessential "wintery northeast place." And you cant go wrong there for 2 or 3 days. There is plenty to do there. But for 8 or 9, I would recommend some place in Colorado or the Alps. If you are not skiiers, I would not recommend trying it at a place that will be jam packed, and cost you both $150 per day just for lift tickets. Save that for a small, local mountain with shorter lines and cheaper lift tickets. I am going to Bermuda in November for three days. Its close, affordable with off season rates, and seems like theres fun things to do there. Never been though, so not sure what to check out. Good luck!

+1, vermont is a lot of fun in the winter. i recommend stowe vermont. beautiful town, great skiing, twisty roads, and has got kind of a bavarian feel to the town and resorts. don't forget to stop in waterbury, vt for the ben and jerry's factory tour!

Skiing and snowboarding is a lot of fun...I would check out a nice winter resort ski area...wherever it may be. 8-9 days is a stretch for a ski resort though.
