Portable GPS question about service and pricing

So i'm trying to buy one of those portable GPS devices, like a Garmin Nuvi, I have a few questions:

1. does the GPS service last a lifetime?
2. will there be any additional fees I'll have to pay every year or something to keep it going?
3. do i have to pay fees in the future for traffic updates?
