Viper ACR tested!

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...cr-test-review

One ton of downforce at top speed, yet still traps 126 with its 6MT. Here's a poll question. Which car would be quicker around the Nordschleife, the ACR or Porsche GT2? Let's assume that Dodge can also send its team and rent the 'ring out for a week like Porsche did to best enable its halo model. Yes, that was a dig at Porsche.

Of course the Porsche GT2 RS is faster, it currently holds the record.

Point 1: What team? The Viper is dead.
Point 2: Home-field advantage is a thing.
Point 3: Which one would anyone who values their vertebrae drive on a public road regularly?

Woulda, coulda, shouda ... whatevs, you know. And now, Dodge has a bunch of Hellcats that can't handle worth a damn anyway.

Ms. Kowalski sounds like a cool lady, though.

Too bad it can't snag any more track records in the US from the ACR. King of one track, sure, but a pawn on the rest of them. Besides, Porsche spent hundreds of hours developing and testing their cars at the Ring compared an amateur effort of a few laps during rainy conditions crowdfunded by Viper owners and fans because Dodge marketing sucks donkey balls - not exactly an apples to apples comparison. The fact that the Viper beat the 918 and P1 on multiple tracks without any AWD, DCT or hybrid tech itself is a marvelous achievements.

Glad I bought a Viper before production ended. Nothing against Porsche I quite like the ownership experience, but there's nothing that screams badass like an 8.4 liter all american V10 under a gigantic phallic hood paired exclusively to a manual transmission, along with 355 rear tires and side exhaust. Porsche's are too sterile to put a smile on my face the way a Viper does - or even an AMG for that matter.

Dodge didn't bother doing that because the car was being discontinued. There was a crowdfunded effort with a few hot laps during bad weather and the Viper still managed a decent lap time. It still holds the most number of track records in the world - 14 I think. Talk about going out with a bang. There will never be anything like it.

I love the Viper, but no chance against the GT2 RS for it. PDK alone is too big of an advantage.

I like the ACR. Hope I can pick one up someday. But the GT2 RS would crush it.

As an ACR owner who's followed the ring attempt from the beginning, I'd say there's no chance of the ACR or any other brand beating the GT2rs at the ring based on these factors:

1) Basically all Porsches are born and bred on the ring
2) Porsche is there 24/7
3) Tires were designed specifically for that car and for that track
4) Home court testing advantage
5) Best possible conditions
6) Near unlimited funding to obtain the best times
7) ACR had tires that couldn't withstand the track after several attempts
8) Efforts were diminished due to emergency spare tires that were subject to extreme cold temps during delivery
9) ACR just didn't have enough funding and ideal ring time to pull off its best possible time

I know a lot of this sounds like excuses and I agree. The fact is, on the ring, the GT2rs is the king 100%. Even if all the stars were aligned, the ACR would not have a chance of beating its time, maybe get a bit closer but definitely can't beat it. Any other track would be a totally different story. The ring record is and will for a very long time be held by Porsche. Full disclosure, I'm not a fan of Porsche. I admire and respect their cars, I just don't like the brand.

In other news, I've heard of someone local that's going to do a self funded ring attempt with two ZL1 1LE. Learning from all the mistakes that the ACR made with its attempt, I think the 1LE is going to pull off an extremely impressive time for a Camaro at that price.

Why did the ACR run those tires? Was Kumho a sponsor? Couldn't they do what bicycles do, just spray paint a Kumho label over the Michelin one?

The Kumhos are the original tires that came with the ACR. Let's just say that Kumho was the only tire manufacturer willing to develop a tire specifically for the ACR of such low volume. They did a damn good job for what it is and managed to hold at least 13 official lap records in America. There are many other non official ones around NA specifically bone stock production cars.

To maintain some sort of legitimacy with production car track records, each car tested should run everything that is original to the production car sans a cage for safety reasons. The tires are a great hero lap record setter but its obvious that they were not designed for a 13 mile track like the ring. On a normal track, the fronts would last about 1.5-2 track days before they are completely destroyed due to the massive downforce.

Thanks. I'd forgotten that they were the OEM fitment. I thought I'd recalled that the ACR had PC2's as an OE fitment.

The Corsas were stock for the TA 1 and 2.0 I believe. I drove on those for 3 days at Bondurant on a TA 2.0 and went thru 2 sets. Horrible tires. Massive understeer and unpredictable with heat. Even the Kumhos were much better.
