Hey guys I was looking into buying my first hand gun. I have shot about 5 different ones of friends but not sure of caliber and make as I never really paid much attention to it. Now that Im looking into buying one Im paying more attention to all that stuff.

My goals for the hand gun is to a gun that is a good all around gun:

1) Accurate
2) Comfortable
3) Good For Self Defense
4) Fun To Use For Rec Shooting
5) Good for Carry & Conceal

Whats everyone that has one have? Also if you where to have just one what would you get? and what caliber ?

2) You need to decide by testing a few at the range(youve already tried 5 thats a good start)
3) Self defense for where? Home? Car? Person?
4) You dont want your CC(see 5)gun to be the same for rec shooting, not as much fun
5) If I were to get another one at this point, it would be the new XD45

If price weren't an issue, I'd definately be in the market for the HK45, probably the short one. Will take both 40 and 45, NO recoil, and shoots pretty straight (when I point it pretty stright)

A friend of mine just ordered a XD45 and was trying to talk me into getting one. I was reading on thefiringline.com that some of the guys felt the balance on the XDs where not as on par as the Glocks but then on the other side people say the Glocks have a weird angle to them.

This first gun is mainly for Conceal & Carry in my car and on person. Im picking up a pistol grip 12 guage for under the bed for home security as I have heard from several people that they are best for break ins and being half asleep and not having to worry about shooting your neighbor on accident.

Im sure later on I will get another one for range/ target use, but still would like to be accurate with what ever im shooting.

I own an HK USP 9mm.

It fits all your requirements except #5. The reason I chose the 9mm version was because it is great for rec shooting and the ammo is a lot cheaper than .40 and .45. I am pretty sure you know there are the compact variants of the USP, so you can get one that fits all 5 requirements!

The only drawback some people dont like about the USP is the polymer grip. I find it to be great however because it greatly dimishes the overall weight and makes it less taxing to shoot.

As for home defense, I honestly think anyone breaking into your house wearing body armor is someone really willing to take you out. Even with higher caliber handguns, you probably won't stand a chance being half asleep anyways. So for all those other people who won't be prepared, 9mm at < 7 feet would probably be good enough to drop them.

The .357 is easy to carry and very reliable - hammer is complete shrouded. The .22 is good to practice with as the bullets are cheap. I also have a Calico M110 .22 which is really just a toy, but very fun for target practice.

Ive heard nothing but good stuff about HK units. I'll def. have to check them out. I liked the XD as some of the safety features on it are unique but a lot of people where complaining about mussel flip and saying the Glock is better balanced gun when compared to it. The price on the XD is also very attractive but Im the kind of person that will spend the extra money to get something that is better if there are valid reasons behind it.

While I know what you're saying and not intending this to be a flame, that was a poor choice of words. A gun, no matter the calibre is not a toy. The A-G nuts could have a field day with a gun owner saying that.

I own a glock 17 (9.mm), I have the 17 round clips with +2 cop extenders on them. Great gun, smooth, accurate, never jams, and can fire under water. It does not have a saftey which I love. If your finger is not on the trigger you can hammer a nail with it and it will not fire... finger on the trigger thats a different story. I have read reports where police officers have fired 400,000 rounds through it without it jamming once. Pretty easy to clean as well.

Pistol grip with short (legal) barrel is (locked) on top of the closet, with a 5-shell sleeve with magnum slugs, just in case the hood gets a little too hoody.

I am pretty sure your local range has a USP 9 and a USP 45 available for rental. I highly highly recommend HK. USP 9 costs about $700-750 and I think the 45 is a bit over $800 (I forgot). The compacts will add another $100 or so to the final price tag as well.

Although I'm not entirely sure, I think you can just buy the .45 barrel and just swap out the 9mm barrel while keeping the slide. Don't quote me on that though.

I'm no gun expert, but I have an HK USP40 Compact (stainless w/ polymer grip), and I love it. However, I'm a fairly big, strong guy and I notice quite a drop in accuracy and time back on target with multiple shots as compared to the 9mm. For that reason, if I were doing it again, I might go with the 9mm version instead. I'll probably eventually get a 9mm version anyway, to use as a concealed carry weapon, and so my wife will have access to something easier to handle for home defense.

HK .40 P2000. Comes with 3 grip size adapters. Had a HK .45 before this one. You will pay, but in my opinion the best handgun made. The P2000 fits in a "fanny pack" if that helps re: size.

I have pretty big hands but Im not a big guy. Im 6'2" but tall and thin. have large hands with long fingers. I guess I need to get back down to the range and get my hands actually on the different models.

I have a Sig P226 ST, but if you need to conceal I'd go for an HK P2000SK in .40 or 9mm. Make sure it's SA/DA too. I think that version is called V3.

edit: If the standard P2000 isn't too big you might just want to wait for the P30 to come out. Unless of course you don't want 9mm

It's a bit harder to conceal, but that in itself acts as a deterrent.

I was looking at compacts not subcompacts ... as the subcompacts seem too small in my hands.

Random question ... what size caliber to most law enforcement carry ?
