Good cars to lease as winter/beater

I got my m3 in march and already took it from 36k miles to 43k miles.
Daily driving the thing is sublime but winter is around the corner and I'm starting to think more about practicality and also keeping it in good shape and limiting the miles more. I just got a new job and my commute will increase from 8-20 miles a day. Gas is an expense and I think I want something I can get more utility and economy out of for road trips(such as snowboarding) and winter duty to save my m3.

I was looking into the impreza hatchback and it seems to fit the bill nicely. Can you recommend any other cars to look into? I am looking for something dirt cheap that will offer decent winter performance, fuel economy and utility as a road trip/adventure car.

I have had great luck with my Subarus for winter/DD duty. The cars are like tanks in the snow and overall have not had any issues.

Can't go wrong with subarus in the winter would be my DD of choice if i could afford another car
