I would never spend 10 grand on a pair of breaks...

Yes, well the OP's dad is considering spending 10 grand on a pair of "brakes" you see...which is quite different. And given everything I've read about the ceramic composite brakes, almost well worth it. Especially since if you're spending that kind of money anyways, what's another 10K? And if his dad is tracking, probably a good investment in the long run.

Go for the 997 turbo!!

I think the Audi will be set up softer and will have a nicer interior, but it weights 100lbs more, has 60 less horsepower, and is down nearly 190 lb-ft of torque.

He helped me configure the cars above, and I'm pretty sure he's going to go to spend the extra 20 grand and get the Turbo.
Get the R8 V12TT diesel then. The Porsche is awesome, but how rare would it be to own a R8?

Between the R8 and 997TT, I'd pick the R8 no contest. The 997TT is very fast but it's just not a pretty car.

R8 is beautiful, fast, cheaper and easier to drive at the limit than the 997TT.

If you want something even more practical but fast, comfortable and great handling...then the M5 is the best you can get.

With the 911 facelift coming, I would either wait or pick up an R8.

Have dad take the R8 for an afternoon of hard driving, then have him sleep on it. RAW performance from the turbo will exceed the R8, but comfort and day to day drive ability, the R8 is the car to get. Not to mention there are 1,000s of Porche Turbos on the streets of CA, how many R8's do you see on a daily basis?

I forget which mag test this was but the R8 was faster around the track than the 911TT.... just shows you how much better it handles.

Also, 911's are a dime a dozen in socal, get something original, the R8 is going to be extremely rare

Real world pricing for a GT2 is a fair amount over 200K.

I'd suggest a Turbo or GT3.

My dad does go to the track fairly often (I'd say twice a month was about right) and they are just so much better. Never fade, no dust, don't overheat (his friend had that problem on an AMG). Plus, it helps resale value and the yellow caliper means some thing's got to be up.

You mean RS6? My dad's price range is $100-$200,000. By fast, he and I mean low 4 to mid 3 second times 0-60.

That's just a concept, and it looks gross. Way too many fins, slots, and that spoiler is rice.

Thanks for the info, and it definitely looks like Turbo or R8.

Exactly. AMG's, M's, and P-Cars run in flocks in Southern California. Something like an R8 or a GT2 would be rare and epic.

My dad is going to schedule a test drive for the R8, since he's already driven the Porsche. The comparison needs to be fair.

I honestly don't think it would take me more than a split second to choose between a 997TT and an R8. The R8 looks better, performs damn well, and is far more exclusive than the aging Carrera design.

I'm kind of hard on the Carrera line to be honest. I don't like how common they look and how stagnated their design movement is. The only 911 I'd possibly consider over an R8 would be a GT2, and even then you're dishing out at least another 70k or so.

I love the Aston, my dad does not feel the same way.

Today we went around looking at cars, and there was this fully loaded Black on Black used M5. The amazing this was it was going for $69,991.

We also visited the Audi dealership (R8) and the Porsche stealership (Turbo, GT2, GT3).

By the way:

I was thinking and you guys were saying "with options the GT2 is going to be over the price limit"... But... There really is no options on the GT2. Navigation: Standard. Carbon Fiber Bucket Seats: Standard. Ceramic Brakes: Standard.

I know C&D tested the R8, 911TT and the Aston Martin V8, with the R8 coming out on top, although it was slower on the track.

R8: Likes the looks, loves the interior, likes the engine, loves the sound, and he thinks is great for the price.

Turbo: Doesn't like the styling too much, likes the interior, loves the engine, loves the badge.

GT3: Likes the looks more than the Turbo, thinks 415hp is plenty, RWD is a plus, also likes the fact that he could tear up the track, then drive home in relative comfort. He also likes the price, and will probably get Ceramic Brakes if he decides to get a GT3.

GT2: Loves the engine, loves the sound, loves the interior, loves the exterior, loves Porsche. RWD. 530HP. Everything standard. But, the price is $191,000.

So he wouldn't mind driving a GT3 daily? Huh, I've never been in one so I couldn't give my own opinion, but I really want to drive one.

I just don't think the Turbo is worth it when you can get an R8. Now, comparing a RWD Porsche to the R8 is something else.
