Google's New Driverless Cars

The technology is amazing and we've come a long way given the history of cars, but I won't want to get caught dead in one; looks like a cross between a smart and a Beetle! Couldn't Google say, partner with a major manufacturer like they did with the Prius and perhaps make one with the same concept, but without all the driver's stuff? Either way, call me old-fashioned but I still like to have control of the car. Even though I've never owned a stick shift car outright, I still even like the 3-pedal driving.

Love it. Had me hooked seeing the blind guy in the car. I can't imagine being in that situation and then having a freedom such as driving restored. The autonomy it will give some people will be amazing.

Yes, I am one of those people that enjoys driving, and enjoys being connected to the car via the steering wheel. That won't go away anytime soon. But I can also see the benefit of getting in the car, saying "work" and relaxing for the next hour+ of traffic. I can live out my TimeCop fantasy . . . FINALLY.

I agree, this is a fantastic way to alleviate traffic during rush hour. Can you imagine taking out the manual driver instinct that causes major jams by just hitting the brakes a couple times without really needing it. I would love to have one, because driving to the city is such a pain in the ass with all those assholes out there that i always have to keep an eye out for. I can see this tech improving by managing traffic itself by decreasing/increasing speed way before a jam could occur or at least minimize it.

I would love to jump in and sit in the car for an hour chilling or taking nap in the morning or just relaxing driving home after a long day. Kind of like taking the train but you dont have to sit next to that person who likes to take their shoes off and smells like shit or having to listen to other people's problems for an hour.

I'd take a bigger more luxurious one with blackout curtains so me and the lady can have some time to ourselves while in traffic ... Of course wearing our seatbelts

The geolocation tracking is a given with these cars. But with Google behind them they'll probably do speech to text translation of every word spoken in the car and upload that to Google too. Then they'll display advertisements to you, and play them through the car's audio system. It won't be something you can disable.

The car will also have a wifi connection. Where everything is intercepted and transmitted to Google.

Google is evil.

That is fuking genius. Suggestive ads based on your convo. Then you have nothing else to do but be forced to watch commercials on the 10" Nav/HDD/ screen or look outside the windows. If that were the case, I'd just talk about porn and have parental controls on haha.

Basically, Google will own the world.

For some of the replies, I think my point wasn't enunciated well enough...

I mean, I appreciate the technology and the wonders it can do (esp. for the blind and disabled), not to mention I never thought of the "auto-pilot-through-traffic" scenario since THAT sounds pretty cool to me (but again, I'd still like a manual override when I feel too detached from the road on non-traffic situations, like going through Mulholland Dr), but most of my rants were kinda directed towards the appearance of the vehicle.
